You can still ask him to play baseball with you Clark. You can still ask him to play.

Batclan vs Superclan at softball would be cute... though I think the Black Cat might have gotten it right in terms of out of control emotions in her "Rivalry" series of Batman and Sons

Well, it'll only work if the Superclan has a handicap, I think. Maybe Kryptonite-embedded balls?

That's rather cute... and YES you should have asked him Clark, you really, really should have.

How about an enclosed stadium with red sun lamps?

So how do they both remember this as being each other?

Supes probably recognized Alfred when he saw him again as an adult. Not to mention there were photos of the child Bruce Wayne in the newspaper.

And I'm sure Bruce must have seen some pictures of Clark as a kid as well (I remember there was a story where Bruce pretended to be someone else and talked to Martha Kent, though I don't know if that's still canon).

I don't think that's what this is about - it isn't so much that they remember this as the first time they 'met', it's more that they both remember the encounter. They may or may not have figured out the details in later years - I don't think it ever says as much in the captions - but the actual experience is something they both remember. Clark remembers going to fetch the ball with his friend and coming across the sad boy in the car, Bruce remembers BEING the sad boy in the car, and seeing the two boys stop and look at him. It's one of those brief encounters that has little actual impact, but which you remember vividly nonetheless.

Ah--that makes sense. I thought from the "I wonder if he remembers" that they both thought of it as important because they knew who each other was, but I like it this way.

Though there's something sadly comic about Alfred on a roadtrip with Bruce trying to cheer him up.

It seems like the sort of thing he'd do - despite his mannered, butlerly exterior, Alfred has always struck me as the sort of person who's not afraid to dive in with gusto and get his hands dirty. A road trip would seem to be just the sort of thing he'd try - plus, it might be just as much for his own benefit as Bruce's; as a native of the UK who (if I remember correctly) came directly over to Gotham and a job as a faithful servant to the Waynes, he probably hadn't had much of a chance to see any of the US.

He totally would do it. It's just sad how little success he'd have at it--though I think Bruce appreciated it. I just find myself thinking how it would have gone if they'd picked up Dick at the same age at the same time. He and Bruce would have been like night and day in the back seat.

Damn, Loeb, what happened? You used to write like this, so what's the deal with Rulk and Ultimatum?

(My bet is 'Evil Clone')

His son died some time ago due to cancer, he's still probably reeling from that. TV Tropes calls it 'Creator Breakdown'.

I know. I usually never bring that up on comments because I don't think it's fair, but still...
Besides, his work before 2005 wasn't that cool either, except when paired with Sale. Maybe that's it.

(And thanks for refraining to post a TV Tropes link! I have homework to do!)

I remember this. Sad little Bruce looks oddly adorable...and would make a nice icon, with the words "Sad Bruce" or something.

What, that's it?

Of course, this just reaffirms that the two of them couldn't be more in love with each other if they tried. And I speak as one who doesn't even ship them.
