The original story was one of the highpoints of the Silver Age, FANTASTIC FOUR# 57. It provided most of the plot for the second Fantastic Four movie, as well. But it was not until NOT BRAND ECCH# 1 in 1967 that Stan Lee and Jack Kirby let us in on the real events behind the legends.

I love how Stan and Jack were aware enough of the flaws in their work that they could cheerfully lampoon it with such reckless abandon. It's a type of humility that a number of comics creators today could stand a bit of.

I don't think there's any problem with taking it seriously as fiction - the problem is when you forget it's fiction, and start thinking of it as reality.
