Cooke seemed to be able to adapt Ebony into something that wasn't insulting during his run on The Spirit, so it can be done.

Yes, but that was Cooke, who's seriously goddammed awesome in a lot of ways already, not the least of them being his ability to portray period characters well regardless of gender ("There's the door, spaceman."). You're right, it can be done, but ... well, a LOT of creators aren't Cooke.
