None to fond of the art but the story was reasonably well written if a bit rough around the edges.

To paraphrase an internet meme:

Really? I liked the art. Particularly panel three, first page. That is some nice Bruce Wayne jerk face.

Really fun story I thought, with very well done art that fits it very well. Love the portrayal of Batman here too, and the nod to his early, typically over-looked days as a crime fighter when he carried (and used) pistols.

I like Bruce's victorious smile on the second page. it's actually kinda cute.

I really will have to get this once it's out in trade. It's looking pretty spiffy. :D

The art looks like it was done in Poser. I can't tell for sure, because Batman and Doc Savage aren't naked lesbians.

Why do you think that?

I am... SO in love with this art.

Nobody draws like this anymore and it makes me sad.

The expressions just seem very static and lifeless. Plus, the helicopter looks like it was rendered by the Duke Nukem 3D engine.

I actually think the helicopter looks like something out of Doom 3. :P

But the expressions? Man. :( They're awesome. And at least they're not pornface...

Yeah, but there's no sense of motion. I think it's Poser. I can tell because of the pixels and from browsing quite a few Rule 34 sites in my day.

Note the reference to Batman carrying fourty fives, this is the OLD old school Batman that used guns. And if I recall... he DID kill people.

I love the smug asshole Bruce Wayne face. He kind of looks like he's going to star in a Bond movie.

I enjoyed this but there were things I both loved and hated all in the same issue. I loved when Bruce has Doc call him nothing, at that moment the ruse worked perfectly, and it will take a lot to make Doc truly think otherwise. I hated the guns... I'm sorry but damnit they weren't even a large part of his Golden age appearance. I hope they are dumped soon.

I don't think you've ever seen art done in poser, because it looks absolutely nothing like this.

I love the exchange between Doc and Bruce on the first page.

Their later meetings are both pretty awesome, too. But the first is great.

(Although I do wish DC would let their acquired characters sell themselves, Spirit and Doc Savage shouldn't need to be crossed over with Batman to sell, dammit.)

He did, but the only one I can remember right off hand was some kinda vampire guy, I do believe.

The gun usage and his debate over whether or not to carry one was written into continuity in BATMAN: YEAR TWO, but most writers gloss it over, which is kinda sad. I wonder if he's even explained to Dick, Tim, Babs, etc. that he knows first hand carrying a gun doesn't make things any easier.

These days he has a pathological phobia about using a gun, he can pick them up and the like, but never use one (He did make sure his Robin's were trained in marksmanship, and in using an unloaded gun as a throwing weapon though) so his buying a gun in "Bruce Wayne: Murderer" was seen as something of a gutpunch to everyone who knows him.

Oh yeah, I'm well aware of him training the Robins in marksmanship, I just wonder if he let them know he used to carry a gun himself, or if they've found out themselves at some point.

For starters I'm not sure how in continuity anything to do with Year 2 and 3 is any more, things like Zucco's past changed a couple of times since then.

Didn't Denny retcon it out of existence along with Son of the Demon (which Morrison promptly brought back) during his editorial run?

It's Noto, far as I can tell. I've seen some of his sketch stuff and it is, indeed, drawn, but it all comes out kinda like this. Great for illustration, but not that much movement.

That said, I like the scene where Bruce gets punched, it works for me.

Therein lies the issue, though! DC tried to sell the Spirit as his own, individual property following the Batman crossover issue, and it folded after about thirty issues. This is, IMO, the major issue with a lot of new books from the Big Two, these days, that if they don't have a recognisable brand name on there then some particular properties just don't have much of a chance.

So really, it's nothing to do with DC not wanting their characters to sell, but more that some fans just aren't interested. Having an unusual version of Batman in there, though, then manages to hold some kind of appeal.
