Mighty Mutanimals #9: The Mutanimals Meet Slash

To give you guys a slight break from the Future-Turtles (I'll be posting a sample from their first story arc later), lbd_nytetrayn requested scans from the TMNT Adventures spin-off Mighty Mutanimals, specifically the issue where they met the deranged turtle Slash.

The issue opens with Slash rampaging through Rio de Janeiro, looking for his beloved palm tree. The military is called out. Guns, tanks, and missiles do nothing but piss Slash off even more, so they bring out...



Sometime later, the Mutanimals discover a newpaper article about Slash's capture. Mistakenly assuming him to be one of the Ninja Turtles, they set out for Brazil and free the still-unconscious Slash.



Slash starts kicking the Mutanimals' butts until Leatherhead pins him and gets him to calm down.







Due to lagging sales, this was the last issue.

Also, back in gradeschool, one of my classrooms had a TMNT book based on these comics, that told how Krang got stuck on the pollution planet (something about a tournament between the goodguys and badguys or something).

I also remember a giant disembodied cows head named cow lick who could teleport people by eating em.

I tried to get my mother to make me a stuffed Cowlick when I was a youngling. She wanted nothing to do with it, not realizing how incredibly AWESOME it would have been.

And TVTropes tells me Cudley showed up in the Mirage comics at some point. Now that's something I wanna see!

Man, Slash became a pussy. Mutanimals was never translated into dutch, but I read the Trutle's story that featured Slash and he was effin bad ass, despite going on about palm trees all the time.

Was Mutanimals more "kid friendly" then the later TMNT stuff?

More or less. It doesn't go full-on fluff or anything, but it's not as mature as the later TMNT storylines.

Plus the letters sections mention they were angling for a possible cartoon deal, so I guess they didn't want to scare off the suits.

Never cared much for this art style, I have to admit.

So, was this Slash's last appearance before the Mutanimals' deaths? I just remember him showing up suddenly and mauling Future Don and Raph...

(And incidentally, I could be wrong, but is Slash totally making up/imagining this whole 'Palmadise' thing? I thought he was created by Shredder.)

Nah, the Archie comics are a separate continuity loosely based on the cartoons. Here he's an alien.

Oh. OK, so that makes... how many different Turtle continuities now? There's the original Mirage series, the first cartoon, the Archie series, the second cartoon, the movies, the THIRD cartoon - so, at least six. Wait, no, possibly five because the first and second cartoons relate to one another, don't they? So at least five, maybe six. Am I missing any?
In any case, I'm not surprised there aren't as many Turtle fans as there used to be. That's a hellll of a lot of different stuff to keep track of.

I dunno. That's not nearly as convoluted as Transformers gets (a franchise so complicated that the terms "continuity family" and "micro-continuity" had to be invented to sort things out).

Transformers fans tend to be long-term devotees, though - people who fell in love with the toys and the characters back when they were originally coming out, and stuck with them over the years. The Turtles, on the other hand, tend to have a bit of a broader base, I think - you've got your die-hard fans from back in the day, and then you've got your younger fans who've been watching the more recent series and reading the comics. I could be wrong, of course, but that's the way it seems to me.

Aw, I loved the issue where Krang took Slash from Morbus, because at the end Rocksteady & Bebop got to be on the planet with the animals & they had a parrot. I always liked those two.
Anyway, so what do you mean this was the last issue? I thought the Mutanimals all died? I still have no idea how this series ended, the comic shop I went to back in the day stopped carrying it, so I thought it had been canceled. Did they seriously all die? So cold. Mondo Gecko will always be my fav.

After the Mutanimals series was cancelled, a back-up story ran in TMNTA 48-54, and the Mutanimals were killed at the end of it, which led into TMNTA's "Terracide" arc.
