leikomgwtfbbq for some Sandman, specifically, the story of His Imperial Majesty, Emperor Norton I, with a guest appearance by Mark Twain. 8/24 pages from Sandman issue #31.
Historically, Joshua Norton was originally a businessman and trader, who went into bankruptcy in 1858 after a rice deal gone bad and the subsequent litigation. Broken and broke, he left San Francisco and, as Gaiman tells it, was set upon by Despair, who found his situation a good setup for a challenge she and the other younger Endless wanted to put before their brother, Dream. The challenge is that he must be able to keep Norton out of the realms of Despair, Desire, and Delirium for the rest of the human's natural life.
Dream accepts, and in 1859, Joshua Norton returns to San Francisco.

On January 8, 1880, Emperor Norton collapses in front of Old St. Mary's Church, and despite quick efforts by an observant policeman, dies before a carriage can arrive to take him to a hospital. Despair grudgingly concedes the challenge to Dream, and Death arrives for Norton.
