Just goes to show you what happens when you get too literal with pop culture. Didn 't Sunspot always say, "what would Magnum do ?".

Sunspots obsession with Magnum PI has been a running gag since his first appearances.

I don't mind it, really.

When reading in the time periode it's published, it gives you a feeling of being anchored to the real world, instead of a bubble that's not actually anywhere at all.

When you look back and read it many years later, it's sort of like a window into another time. Sure, it interrupts the flow a little as you realize how out of date it is, but it's worth a smile.

And most of the time, you're going to be dating yourself anyway, it'll just be in subtler ways, fashions, social mores, etc.

Personally, I'd rather they use real timely pop culture references than make up fake pop culture references for their own universe, which always tend to annoy me even more (one of my pet peeves, mostly on television... whenever you see a TV show on another TV show, that they've made up to have somebody watching, it's always ridiculously poorly acted or given a title that you can't believe would ever make it to air).

Even at the heights of "Thrillermania", I had a hard time parsing Michael Jackson as "a hunk". Let's face facts, even 100% natural Jacko was never the most masculine guy around.
