New Mutants #21
Nov. 21st, 2009 09:30 pmIt's Saturday night, and you know what that means...

SLUMBER PARTY!
After her battle with the Demon Bear, Dani is released from the hospital and the New Mutants invite a group of local teens over for a slumber party to celebrate.

Oh god this is so 80s. SHAMONE!

Then Cannonball and Sunspot come back from their night out, and...

And, just for the heck of it, Sam Guthrie skinny-dipping.

Date: 2009-11-22 12:42 pm (UTC)When reading in the time periode it's published, it gives you a feeling of being anchored to the real world, instead of a bubble that's not actually anywhere at all.
When you look back and read it many years later, it's sort of like a window into another time. Sure, it interrupts the flow a little as you realize how out of date it is, but it's worth a smile.
And most of the time, you're going to be dating yourself anyway, it'll just be in subtler ways, fashions, social mores, etc.
Personally, I'd rather they use real timely pop culture references than make up fake pop culture references for their own universe, which always tend to annoy me even more (one of my pet peeves, mostly on television... whenever you see a TV show on another TV show, that they've made up to have somebody watching, it's always ridiculously poorly acted or given a title that you can't believe would ever make it to air).
