Four scans from Invincible Iron Man #20.

The issue is divided into some sequences in Tony's head, where he seems to be continually repeating a sequence of trying to dig something up before some robots arrive and kill him; and scenes in the real world, where the heroes decide what to do about him, and Madame Masque orders Ghost to find coma-Tony and kill him.

So Tony has prepared a lengthy message for the assembled heroes:

He goes on to explain that he's eradicated essentially the whole legacy of the Iron Man tech between the virus and Stane's earlier wrecking of Stark Industries, so if he doesn't survive he'll at least have done that.

He pops back in again briefly to say that Osborn's operation will eventually fall apart, then also that they should expect heavy casualties whenever the time comes to take him down. It's a realistically rambling possibly-final-message.

Anyhoo, the assembled heroes marvel briefly at his astonishingly complicated plan.

I assume you mean in a cosmic sense, Pep, because I'm sure Tony would like all those people to come back too (though it feels a bit weird for her to be talking about "Steve" and "Bill"; she didn't know either of them, so far as I know).

Either way, the answer is:

$585,133,287 cumulative worldwide box office.

I think it's the writing - I'm not even sure what his position is, here.

Agreed. I think Fraction missed a step or three.

Does he really believe he did the right thing? With the knowledge he had? In retrospect?

The thing is, from how Tony has been written since the 'Most Wanted' arc, he doesn't seem to be big on genuflection. Well, not since the Five Nightmares arc - and wasn't that a load- I digress. Tony is all witty banter and and pop culture humour. But again, even if he were, why put it on video?

He's saying, if you're going to bring me back (which I know you will, because that is what heroes like you do) then forgiveness.

And it's all a big 'if'. Tony knows that he's tapdanced on people's last nerves, and for all he knows, this might have been the straw that broke the camel's back. He's resigned to the fact that if they can't forgive him, as far as he's concerned, he ran a good race. He can peace out, and live in his coma for twenty three years, ala that man from Belgium.

I don't want Tony dead or curb-stomped. I want grown-up talk, and gradual reconciliation and forgiveness as Tony works with his allies to restore what he broke

Fair enough. I want that too. But I want it to be hard on Tony's side, in that probably over time, if he changed his position, there should be reasons, because he gave too much and did too much to just... change his positions.

I want them to repair things, slowly, not with dumb dramatic gestures and ultimatums.

Hah. I think you need to go and find fanfic for that particular kink.

I guess, fundamentally, I cannot believe that Tony is in doubt about whether they'll restore him. I think he knows them far too well for that.

Why put anything on video, then? Why not just say, here's the instructions, do what you like, peace out. He doesn't need to breastbeat and flail, but a clear explanation of his position, whether he feels he has wronged them, and if he is sorry does not seem unreasonable.

If he IS in genuine doubt about being brought back, this is the last chance he'll ever have to apologize to Thor. He's not taking it.

Well, you see, now that's a tricky question. You can still believe that you were right, but apologise for how things have gone wrong, like you said before. The thing is, Tony believes that he is right, end of. That he has nothing to apologise for, and in the same breath, he doesn't think that they have anything to apologise for, so why bother? By rebooting him, they also acquiesce to his terms. It's like... ticking TOS before using the service and... man, that's cold, Tones. Jeez, the more I argue, the more I shake the depths of his iron dickery.

That is COLD, Tones, equating serious emotional issues to the depth of sending a .cbr file via sendspace. LOL.

Tony puts stuff on a vid to say, here's how we go about it, and these are my plans. It's just like a random youtube video to me, really. Something that you click on, get instructions, fast forward over the meanderings of a teacher (have you seen those youtube vids in terms of how to knit? You get the instructions, but some noise as well). That's what I'm seeing going on here.

What do you say to, "Oh hai, sorry I cloned you, friends?" There's just nothing to say. In JMS' stint on Thor, Tony just doesn't say anything other than falling back on his SHRA stance. Probably there's just stuff so big that you can't even broach subject wise, hence the blanket, 'forgive me if you're going to reboot me, or leave me be.'

Makes sense in a way.

Yeah, it's just so... well, dismissive. Like, never mind your issues, that's all past, accept it or kill me, my way or the highway. And I suppose I hate it so much because the 'my way or nothing' stuff was how we GOT here.

What do you say to, "Oh hai, sorry I cloned you, friends?" There's just nothing to say.

I would settle for, "Thor, I was wrong to use your face and name to attack your friends. I'm sorry." Like, just... an acknowledgment. Someone like Tony, who is rabid about seeing his tech used to hurt people, must surely understand that?

That, I agree with.

This one as well. Because it shows that Tony hasn't learnt anything from his misadvantures with Civil War and anything after that. I know one of the things which niggles at me is the fact that Tony seems incapable of genuflection and actual deep thought.

Yeah. And historically, he hasn't been. Sure, there's been Irondickery, but he's been able to think about stuff, and acknowledge where he screwed up. *sigh* Oh well. Maybe when he's back, other writers will be allowed to write him, and there will actually be some... dealing and moving on.

Yes, and it normally comes between an arc, when Tony is able to catch a breath and his blood grows cool and he says, "Oh, snap. My bad."

But the book has an Eisner, I hear, so what would I know. :/
