The item Lois is looking for here is a blonde wig.

If only the art was better. For the record, Lois meets Superman the usual way later in the comic. You know, she falls off building and he catches her. I guess that scene's pretty traditional by now.

It's just too bad Frank dropped the tiny but recognizable hint of Margot Kidder he used in the first Action issues he did. Otherwise, great.

Well, it always did seem a bit strange that Metropolis only had one paper.

Well, maybe that's not odd nowadays. Still though.

It does make sense though, as originally it started out that he was at the Star, and then it either became the Planet or he moved there, so in a way there were both to begin with.

Awww, I love Clark being a gentleman and not looking up Lois's skirt. I also love perceptive!Lois not being fooled by Clark's whole "glasses=wimp" act.

Not to mention that Lois the reporter is totally badass here.

It's not as bad as I thought it would be - Byrne's re-boot Lois was a tough chick who has no time for Clark at all. This one seems a bit softer in that she takes to Clark right off - and sees through his "mild-mannered"-ness. I assume she first meets Supes himself during the Luthor thing? Just as it was in the post -COIE "Man of Steel" origin?

Also, I don't think I'll get used to Gary Frank drawing Christopher Reeve (and yes I know that's how Frank draws him all the time) while everybody else in the Superman cast looks nothing like their movie counterparts. It just seems off. Is this a movie adaption or something?

Date: 2009-11-27 05:24 am (UTC)
From: [personal profile] darkknightjrk
Yeah, the Luthor conference has a robot malfunction, which pushes Lois off the roof of the building, Clark changes into Superman and catches her, ala Superman: The Movie.

Yes, exactly!!

Seeing CR instead of Superman is jarring and takes me out of the story. Instead of thinking "interesting, what will Superman do next" or something I keep thinking "wow, the artist is good at drawing Chris Reeve."

Good point. He didn't join the DP staff until years into the reboot - when Steve Lombard, Jimmy, Cat, Lois and Clark were all established vets - and then he was supposed to be in the same age group as Lucy Lane and Jimmy Olsen.

What I don't get is... Superman's supposed to have been in the superhero business for around a decade in comic book time, right? So why is it that in every single one of these "year one" type Superman stories (Man of Steel, Birthright, this), Jimmy's always portrayed as around the same age he is today?

That's a pretty good and entertaining Lois Lane, I have to admit that I'm a little bit surprised.

On a side note, I think DC really dropped the ball by not publishing a
Lois Lane: Action Reporter title, written by Greg Rucka (or Warren Ellis, if you really wanted to blow everybody's mind.. Chairleg Of Truth team up!).
I'd buy the hell out of that book.

I'm liking the writing here. Like, a lot. The art, not so much. It's not horrible or anything, but I've never been that big of a fan of making characters that didn't start off in a live-action media look exactly like one specific actor or actress, particularly if they've had multiple live-action portrayals by different actors through the years. (Conversely, I get a bit miffed when comic adaptations of live-action shows or movies don't at least look vaguely like their actors enough to be easily recognizable. In one Buffy comic, I mistook Willow for Cordelia for a few pages, until she was addressed by name. I can understand not figuring out if a guy seen in an out of context panel is Angel or Xander until you see if the shirt is black or floral Hawaiian print, but that one is just a bit disconcerting.) Also, Clark's face keeps getting chipmunk-y expressions; I never saw Christopher Reeves look like the third panel of the first page, not even remotely. *shudder*
