Alison Bechdel's "Fun Home"

Scans from Alison Bechdel's memoir Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic. The summary from the back cover: "Distant and exacting, Bruce Bechdel was an English teacher and director of the town funeral home, which Alison and her family referred to as the 'Fun Home.' It was not until college that Alison, who had recently come out as a lesbian, discovered that her father was gay. A few weeks after this revelation, he was dead, leaving a legacy of mystery for his daughter to resolve."

In Chapter 4, "In the Shadow if Young Girls in Flower," Alison discovers some incriminating photos.

Most comic book stores would rather die than change.

That's so sad. I've lived a bunch of different places, and almost all the comic book stores I've shopped at have been pretty nice places with a good mix of titles. Most of them would stock (and promote and recommend, to the right customer) a book like Fun Home in a heartbeat.

I've heard so many horror stories, and yet my experiences have been the complete opposite. Guess I'm just lucky. My local store even has a "political" aisle with satirical and polemical "regular" books and magazines, as well as alternative/cult literature. I'm pretty sure Fun Home was one of the store's recommended books.

Ah, don't mind me, I've been grumpy today.

But most the stores around me are still doing the superhero-and-superhero-toys thing. Even the ones I like, that's what they're doing.

It seems like the stores in Oregon had the right idea.
