Firstly, here's Dinah's reaction to meeting Mia Dearsden for the first time.
From 'Quiver'

Since Dinah was herself in her late teens when she began dating Ollie, I guess she should know about this sort of thing.
Actually, was that a reference to Arrowette's mum, I wonder...
Secondly, here's Hal's opinion of What Would Ollie Do? No pun intended.
From Brave and the Bold 2,

Hm, how old was Arisa when Hal slept with her? Prior to the retcon of her species having a different relative aging span or some malarky?
This complied with Ollie dating Dinah when she was 18/19, and hitting on Barbara when she was Batgirl kind of make it seem kinda creepy.
If Dinah and Ollie are correct about Ollie's... taste in girls, I guess we'd have to hope he never hangs out with Arrowette, for numerous reasons.
Still, he has something in common with Slade now, that should tick him off to know.

Date: 2009-12-01 02:00 am (UTC)Also? Yet another scene of Black Canary hanging out with Batman. You know, the guy she apparently never knew was Bruce Wayne during the Bruce Wayne: Murderer/Fugitive storyline (despite being an original member of the JLA and despite it being clear everybody knew who everybody in Identity Crisis with the whole mind-wipe) and the guy she said she never asked anything of - not respect, nor friendship in Birds of Prey. Considering that, they do seem to be in a lot of scenes together over the years.

Date: 2009-12-01 02:08 am (UTC)the weird part is that she's not like that at all, she's actually pretty clever. SPOILER ---> when the 2 of them were at a fighting competition and Hal basically said that Kara should stop flirting with him because she was too young, her response was to capitulate on that misconception and immediately enter the competition dressed in a pink frilly dress, bows, and holding a stuffed animal. and later when she reads the BOOK, she understands the enormity and madness that the big entails, but deals with it.
so why is she being depicted as a bimbo? -_-

Date: 2009-12-01 02:20 am (UTC)A very long and probably over-detailed answer
Date: 2009-12-01 04:54 am (UTC)Oh boy. That's actually tricky. And by tricky I mean "so complicated it will make your head hurt."
When Ollie and Dinah originally got together, Dinah was supposed to be the original Golden Age Dinah Drake Black Canary. This took place in a comic that was published in 1969. Now, back then, DC still had multiple Earths, and Dinah was an immigrant from Earth-1. She decided to settle there after her husband, Larry Lance, killed himself and she couldn't bring herself to face a world where he was gone (or something like this). It seems that the writers didn't realize that having Ollie get together with a woman old enough to be his mother was a bit odd.
As the years went by, the age gap between the two became more and more apparent. Dinah, being a Golden Age character, would always be born in the 1920s while Ollie's birthday kept moving further and further in time (since Earth-1 operated on a sliding time scale). By 1980s, Dinah went from being old enough to being Ollie's grandmother, which is probably why, a few years before the Crisis, writers introduced a retcon where Dinah turned out to be the previously unseen daughter of the original who was brainwashed into thinking she was her own mother.
After the Crisis, this was simplified. In Post-Crisis continuity, the Black Canary that Green Arrow dated was always Dinah Lance, daughter of the original Golden Age Black Canary. The relaunched Green Arrow series established that Ollie was in his early 40s, while another series established by that Dihan Lance made her debut at 19, which meant that she was in her late 20s-early 30s in the debut issue of the relaunched Green Arrow series. Ironically, Dinah actually aged a few years during the course of the series (since it took place in real time).
Of course, both Dinah and Ollie have been been deaged by a few years by Lazarus Pit and Parallex-induced resurrection respectively, so God only knows how far apart they are right now.

Date: 2009-12-01 04:57 am (UTC)As time wore on, and the rest of the JSA were being depicted as more and more elderly-looking, someone finally said "Hey, wait a minute...!" and decided they needed to explain why Canary looked so young. They cooked up this bizarre scenario where Dinah the Elder's mind had been secretly transplanted into her previously-unseen daughter's body, and somehow nobody (including her!) noticed the difference, and...oh never mind, it's completely stupid. Dinah is the one character who's origin really was simplified in the Crisis reboot.
