Minor Comic Book News

A couple of things.

For the five people on this comm who I haven't already pushed this link on, Tim Fish is doing a Northstar short in Nation-X #2, coming out next month.

Also, Richard Pini reports that the script to the Elfquest movie has been finished. Not much meat there, so here's the movie news timeline.

	i'm guessing it was thought the ears were a joke about being a 'fairy' (btw does anyone have that panel(s)?), so now in retrospect they removed them. I thought he was some sort of alien or magic being too, first time I saw them. After I found out he was a mutant, I assumed it was one of those random mutations, like Namor's wing-feet. In, what was later massively retconned, story arc. Northstar, who was mysteriously ill for some time, was suppose to come out and say he had AIDS. Higher ups intervened and what was the result was he said he was a fairy. Literal and very thinly shielded double entendre.

After that, naturally a retcon and it is never spoken off again ever. Or I'm assuming that. I haven't located the panel itself, but the panel should be up somewhere, and what few alpha flight books I got is prior to this.

He didn't actually get called a fairy in Alpha Flight #50, he was supposed to be a half-elf (which doesn't take away from the fact that yeah, it was a crap story and would have been one even without the rewrite of epic fail). The "he's not gay, he's just a fairy!" came from other corners.

When he actually came out about fifty issues later, there wasn't anything about him being a fairy -- literally or otherwise -- which was what it seemed like you were referencing.

	I'm not sure what you mean by "when he was printed". Northstar's been out since 1992 and in quite a few comics since then. And yes, I believe he and Colossus got one kiss in the Ultverse (thank you, Mr. Kirkman) before the writers crippled him. 	He's a much older character than just 92. 92 was the year he officially came out, 5 years after the fairy-AIDS fiasco. Rumor was he was to be written off in 87 as dying from AIDS but in the fracas and retcon, he survived to this day. So I suppose the whole incident was a mix blessing. Yes, I know. I'm still not sure what your original point was. It seemed as if you meant that the reason he was only kissed by girls was because of the era when these comics were printed. Mine was that he's been out for almost twenty years at this point and his last kiss with anyone, let alone a guy, was back in the mid-eighties.

The reason they showed him being kissed by women was for the inevitable 'shock' reaction by Aurora nd Rogue, who were acting as stand-ins for the reader, who at that point weren't supposed to be fully aware that JP was gay. Since being gay isn't visual, the only way to illustrate was to have him (or other characters) flinch when being kissed by girls, or show him kissing a guy, or wear an "I'm GAY!" T-shirt. Can't say I'm excited by the X-Nation story, as it's based upon a relationship that's based upon Land having found a guy he found easy enough to trace as JP's BF. I see JP as a player, sports star that he is.

Re. ElfQuest: OMG it has only taken a few DECADES! And I doubt any voice actors would ever sound right to me. (Also, how would they distinguish between human and elf speech?)

But all the Northstar in this post made me squee. And I am so looking forward to finally seeing Northstar again. Here's hoping we finally get that kiss.
