He's BACK baby!!
Jan. 2nd, 2010 01:36 amPreview for two X-titles at Newsarama here, including New Mutant #9 (Which we've seen unlettered pages for before). (The other preview is Nation X, and it's PAD penned, so is a no-no here)
Just in case though - Spoilers under the cut
Doug and Warlock are being checked out post Necrosha and it would appear that Doug has managed to recover completely from being A) dead and B) a Necroshan zombie thing.
Doug is fine, but Warlock is operating at low power and will take a long time to regenerate since he appears to have switched to a vegan diet... or the T-O equivalent thereof.
Danger is fascinated by Warlock, but as Doug quickly notices....

Doug appears to have aged whilst he was dead since he was only about 16 then and seems older here. He's a cute li'l dickens just the same though.

If that's the case, then wow, you're right. Language powers CAN be God-like.

Date: 2010-01-03 04:57 pm (UTC)I recall in a fanfic (set in a universe where Doug was eventually restored through the TO virus) where he's challenged on his decision to leave Xaviers to go to college in California. "Don't you question my commitment to Xaviers cause. I died for that cause... twice! After the second time I began to think there HAD to be a better way of doing things"

Date: 2010-01-02 07:01 pm (UTC)Dude, these are still comics we're talking about. Fans might be cumming over his return...but speaking as a fan of Oracle, Cassandra Cain, and Iron Man...handing a comic book writer those kind of cool powers is like asking Freddy Kruger for a hand job. Were I a fan of Cypher (and I'm not, sorry) I'd be much more worried about how they're going to fuck him over than anything else.

"Yeah, I'm the guy who doesn't have a flashy look or impressive powers ... all I can do is read your body language to tell exactly what's on your mind, and use my language abilities to hack into every database you own and completely butt-fuck every digital resource you have, and the kick your fucking ass because I can anticipate all your combat moves. I don't dress to impress because I'm already impressive enough that you should be scared shitless of me as is."

Date: 2010-01-02 09:54 am (UTC)A notable arc is that Cable is determined to recruit Cypher and will do anything to get him to join (as he points out to Domino, X-Force are working in an old Sentinel base they can't get to work, Doug could probably get the whole thing up and running and working for them within an hour). Doug is not happy about the methods used and so, as a "friendly" warning, hacks the X-Force base and, basically breezing past Domino's complex firewalls and security, wipes all Cables records and systems clean, I mean reformatted, fresh out of the manufacturer clean. And the backups, and the back-up back-ups. It takes him something like four minutes.

Date: 2010-01-03 01:33 am (UTC)Plus, whilst she did try to make them happy, she quickly came to realise that they weren't getting any better that way, and then did the hard work of getting them through it properly.
It's been a while since I read the issues, but I thought Empath's actions were his own, Emma certainly took advantage of Magneto's distractedness, but she punished Empath for his actions too.
At the time Emma was seeking to build long term political bridges between the Hellfire Club and Xaviers out of a sense of survival, so she DID heal the NM's and didn't try to convert them to her cause, when they would have been ripe for a bit of manipulation. A while later Magma did come to join her, but that wasn't due to Emma's actions, and Emma freely admitted that some of the Hellions might fare better at Xaviers.

Date: 2010-01-02 07:19 am (UTC)Take Doug Ramsey, for example. There's basically three camps concerning him; the small fanbase that loves him, the small fanbase that hates him, and the large amount of comic book readers who have no idea who the hell Doug Ramsey is, or why they should care about him coming back. Same with Legion and the Hellions - some people will go "Sweet!" but the other eighty-five percent will go, "who?"
Re: Pretty Old School.
Date: 2010-01-02 09:59 am (UTC)In that case, how is that different from introducing any NEW character to a title.
How is it different?
Date: 2010-01-03 12:47 am (UTC)Some writers circumnavigate the problem by introducing obscure characters as though they were new characters, like how I feel DnA have done with most of the cosmic universe. There attitude was more like; "This is Nova. You've never heard of him, but he's awesome, and here's why" While with Zeb Wells, it was more like, "Doug's back! Isn't that awesome?"
Re: How is it different?
Date: 2010-01-03 01:05 am (UTC)Re: Pretty Old School.
Date: 2010-01-02 11:19 am (UTC)This is what happens when the X-office is populated solely by 80s fanboys. You've got them all changing Scott Summers into a completely different character, just because they desperately want him to be cool.
You've got the shoving aside of the majority of characters created since 1990, except Pixie, who they were using as a Kitty-clone.
And now you've got the resurrection of a book that only ever had, for me, marginally interesting characters. Cannonball was the only one I ever cared for, and he was also the one who made the jump to X-Man proper.
Bringing back Doug Ramsay is a terrible move, in my opinion. His one lasting legacy to the X-Men was that he died. Bringing him back completely negates his usefulness, just like it did when DC brought Jason Todd back, and like it would have been with Bucky, if Brubaker hadn't done such a tour de force job of his retcon.
So now, the only character to have stayed dead is Uncle Ben. Great, I wonder when we can expect him to return as a supervillain intent on wreaking vengeance on Aunt May for moving on. Sigh.

Date: 2010-01-02 07:09 pm (UTC)If Illyana is some kind of clone, that wouldn't make her Illyana 2.0. Beast growing fur would make him Beast 2.0, Beast turning into a cat would be Beast 3.0, but McKoy has never been referred to as "Beast 2.0" because he's a different person, not an upgraded version.
Warlock needs to stop asking comic book writers for proper usage of 'net speak.
