Preview for two X-titles at Newsarama here, including New Mutant #9 (Which we've seen unlettered pages for before). (The other preview is Nation X, and it's PAD penned, so is a no-no here)

Just in case though - Spoilers under the cut

Doug and Warlock are being checked out post Necrosha and it would appear that Doug has managed to recover completely from being A) dead and B) a Necroshan zombie thing.

Doug is fine, but Warlock is operating at low power and will take a long time to regenerate since he appears to have switched to a vegan diet... or the T-O equivalent thereof.

Danger is fascinated by Warlock, but as Doug quickly notices....



Doug appears to have aged whilst he was dead since he was only about 16 then and seems older here. He's a cute li'l dickens just the same though.

I love how much the worm has turned for Doug.

It used to be that everyone was all LANGUAGE POWERS PFFT WHAT GOOD ARE THOSE, but now, in the information age, Doug's language powers basically give him God Mode abilities over everyone else, and that smug smirk on his face says that he knows it.

So body language can count as a language Doug can decipher? (according to the mention of the doctor's body language in the first scan)

Because then can't it be used as reading an attacker's moves during hand-to-hand combat and being able to counter with exactly the required attack you need? I'm not sure if this was alluded to before in the past or not.

If that's the case, then wow, you're right. Language powers CAN be God-like.

Not necessarily, Taskmasters power let him mimic any non-meta power move he see's at the speed he sees it happening at.

Doug's power is passive observation, not reaction, so is closer to this guys.

Doug was developing the ability to read body language back in the 80's. We never saw him do it for more than winning at poker, seriously, you do NOT want to try and bluff Doug with a weak hand of cards.

And as I've said before, just because you can READ body language doesn't mean you're in a position to do anything about it. Doug was never that skilled, or eager, a combatant, and I don't think I want to see him become one.

But at least both can be acquired with training. Granted, he won't be as good as someone with Cass' natural talents, but it'd still make him at least as formidable as Prodigy in hand-to-hand combat.

Even now that's he's been freed of the T/O infection I doubt that Wells will stop using him as an uber martial artist.

Except he's a programmer, which means he doesn't just read languages, he knows how to recombine them into functional tools.

You'd still need to be able to interpret it quickly enough to know what moves were being set up as they happened, and have reflexes fast enough and applicable hand-to-hand skills to do something about it. I don't think that applies to Doug.

It would theoretically make him a great negotiator though.

Isn't he part techno-organic now though? They say it's in remission, but it's still what's reanimating him as well. So he could have the processing power nowadays. :)

Dude, these are still comics we're talking about. Fans might be cumming over his return...but speaking as a fan of Oracle, Cassandra Cain, and Iron Man...handing a comic book writer those kind of cool powers is like asking Freddy Kruger for a hand job. Were I a fan of Cypher (and I'm not, sorry) I'd be much more worried about how they're going to fuck him over than anything else.

They still have to deal with the fact that he's now alive again, how he handles his parents, who he never told that he was a mutant (though since Cassandra Nova/Xavier outed the school one has to assume they know in retrospect) and the like.

Just because he knows the words,doesn't mean he knows the right thing to say.

Oh, well, as long as he's incompetent and unable to use his powers in effective, novel ways, then he'll do fine. (Sadly, I am not being sarcastic or sardonic.)
