Preview for two X-titles at Newsarama here, including New Mutant #9 (Which we've seen unlettered pages for before). (The other preview is Nation X, and it's PAD penned, so is a no-no here)

Just in case though - Spoilers under the cut

Doug and Warlock are being checked out post Necrosha and it would appear that Doug has managed to recover completely from being A) dead and B) a Necroshan zombie thing.

Doug is fine, but Warlock is operating at low power and will take a long time to regenerate since he appears to have switched to a vegan diet... or the T-O equivalent thereof.

Danger is fascinated by Warlock, but as Doug quickly notices....



Doug appears to have aged whilst he was dead since he was only about 16 then and seems older here. He's a cute li'l dickens just the same though.

Will they every upgrade Warlock's appearance? I'm not saying that he looks bad, but he is influence by 80s artwork right? What's keeping the creators from giving him a today's "edgy" look

It may be a function of his operating on extremely low power, as they say on these pages - when he's stronger he "polishes" his appearance? I can't find it now, but I'm thinking particularly of that endless chase between Warlock and the Impossible Man that was posted here awhile ago.

When Warlock runs low on power he tends to lose cohesion and, for wont of a better term, starts to "run" and dribble...

No, I just saying that so far, to my knowledge, Warlock's appearance seems to be the only constant in comics for years.

After the Reign of the Superman, Clark grows a mullet.
After Worlds at War, he had a black background on his S instead of yellow.
And do we really need to recount that whole Superman Red and Blue thing?
And his first issue appearance... and he early golden age outfit (with the S diamond being a triangle).

Not really, the only constant is that he's never the same twice beyond his basic black and yellow colouring, and even that was altered for the M-tech Warlock title.

Every artist draws him slightly different. My personal fave is Art Adams, followed by Sienkewiecz(?), his creator; with a Big No to how he's depicted by Alan Davis, whose art I love otherwise.

I would love an Art Adams Warlock and Cypher commission... some lucky day perhaps.

Davis' Warlock I like too, but it's the versatility of Warlock that makes him fun.

The only problem I have with how he's show up in the preview is his uncanny similarity to a Pepperami Animal

In fact, given his deceptively formidable powers, a bland appearance would be perfectly suited to them.

"Yeah, I'm the guy who doesn't have a flashy look or impressive powers ... all I can do is read your body language to tell exactly what's on your mind, and use my language abilities to hack into every database you own and completely butt-fuck every digital resource you have, and the kick your fucking ass because I can anticipate all your combat moves. I don't dress to impress because I'm already impressive enough that you should be scared shitless of me as is."

There's a nice fanfic out there "Go West", which has a world where New Mutants history tooka different turn, and Doug didn't die. He and a bunch of New Mutants and Hellions leave their academies because they want to go to college. Some great fun hi-jinks ensue.

A notable arc is that Cable is determined to recruit Cypher and will do anything to get him to join (as he points out to Domino, X-Force are working in an old Sentinel base they can't get to work, Doug could probably get the whole thing up and running and working for them within an hour). Doug is not happy about the methods used and so, as a "friendly" warning, hacks the X-Force base and, basically breezing past Domino's complex firewalls and security, wipes all Cables records and systems clean, I mean reformatted, fresh out of the manufacturer clean. And the backups, and the back-up back-ups. It takes him something like four minutes.

If I had a choice, I'd have that power in real life. Screw flight and invulnerability and all that, just give me that power, and then leave before I sell you a bridge.

Actually, it's how he looks on these pages that now has me very interested in this book!
