Hello, chaps. I do hope your 2010 started off on the proper footing.

At this time of year, we celebrate the spirit of Janus. We look in both directions; forward and backward, and pause before barrelling on to the next Special Event. With this in mind, the powers that be at Marvel Comics sat down, and made a list honouring its Heroes Of The Decade.

I must say, I do like that #2 and 3 are Captain America.

So, according to Marvel, the greatest hero of this past decade was the guy who did to superheroes what George W. Bush did to civil liberties and "homeland security."

Not only does that sum up the current Marvel mindset frighteningly well, but it also goes corresponds nicely to the Zeroes already being one of the more unrepentantly evil decades in the past century.

If Tony Stark is on that list as a hero, then Osborn ought to be listed as well. The guy may be a psychotic douche but at least he's up front about it.

And he's actually managed to keep the Dark Avengers on a leash.

Actually for people who aren't A.) American or B.) directly victimised by America,
the oughts were generally pretty okay.

China, India, Brazil, even parts of Africa are a lot better off now than they were 10 years ago.

Tony deleted his brain, decided to go "full retard" to gakk from Tropic Thunder. It took Fraction a year and twelve issues to do it in the Wanted arc, with the subpar pencilling duties of Larrocca.

But he is basically waiting to reboot again, hence the whole Dr Strange thing in January, and then Tony gets his brain back, and goes to kick ass re: The Siege with Thor and Cap, heralding Marvel's Age of Heroes.

I am happy for Nova, the two Caps, Ms Marvel, Luke Cage and Deadpool.

Spider-man is now dead to me, there never was a Spider-man. EVER. Wolverine is too over exposed so I don't care much about him, I haven't seen enough of Scott to say whether or not he deserves to be on that list and finally I can't really excuse what Iron Man did during Civil War as something for the 'greater good', at most, he shouldn't even BE No1.

The fact that Iron Man made it over Steve Rogers was like a slap to the face.

But then again, Marvel does seem to like the people who do things "for the greater good", given how they fawn over Norman Osborn. Ah well, it's just a poll.

When the Captain America movie comes out, I'll expect the same type of fawning over Steve Rogers and how people will declare him as even more awesome than Chuck Norris. =)

10) Deadpool: I'm sorry, but no. I'm a huge fan, but he's about as much of a hero as the Punisher. The article acknowledges this, and his attempts to change, but until he starts doing better I have to disagree.

9) Luke Cage: The only problem I have with this is his placing. He should be higher.

8) Wolverine: Ugh. As much as I love him, he's been grossly overexposed, and the whole "revelation of his past" storyline has mostly failed.

7) Nova: In a lot of ways, he's the "face" of current Cosmic Marvel. No problems here.

6) Spider-Man: I love this guy! It's a shame that he completely vanished a couple years ago. I hope they bring him and Mary-Jane back soon.

5) Ms. Marvel: I don't have a problem. I just wish that her own title put less emphasis on the failures and more on the successes.

4) Cyclops: I'm sorry, but NO. When Magneto bows kneels before you, tells you you're The Man, and hot sex doesn't ensue, you know you have a serious problem somewhere.

3) Bucky: There is every reason for this whole storyline to have crashed and burned, but Brubaker actually pulled it off. Bucky is not and will never be Cap, but his arc has been compelling and has earned him his spot here.

2) Captain America: No question that he deserves a place here, but it feels like he earned it more through his absence than his presence. Having Civil War bounce between getting him right and getting him wrong didn't help.

1) Iron Man: ... well, at least it wasn't Norman.

Has this Spider-man character ever appeared in normal continuity? I remember Bendis's Ultimate Spiderman series and Marvel Adventures having a similar character.

And of course, the most recent character on the list was created almost twenty years ago. Three entries from the 70s, and nobody above #6 is from later than the 60s.

Draw whatever conclusions you want from that.

How many times must Nova save the entire universe before he's a better hero then Spider-man.

Every Marvel crossover should end with Nova coming back to Earth and catching up with Earth's heroes and making them feel incompetent.

"Oh, we pissed of the Hulk by banishing him to space so he wouldn't interfere with our in-fighting, and he cam back and destroyed half of Manhattan ruing many people's live, curb stomped basically everyone even those who didn't deserve it. Shit wonder where he went? we should really find him, maybe arrest him. Anyway how bout you?"

"Oh I helped stop Ulton from destroying the universe and saved hundred of worlds and billions of lives. Hey didn't you guys build him? Thanks of that by the way. Any way I gotta go and actually accomplish shit, clean up the bad guy's messes as opposed to my own. Nova out!"

I wish Hercules made the list myself. He's had a big swing from obscurity over the last decade. I was a DCU fanboy and barely read any marvel (Cable & Deadpool being the only Marvel title for about its whole run) until a friend tipped me off on The Incredible Hercules.

Which eventutaully lead me to Mighty Avengers, and reading backissues of that and New Avengers, and actually reading Civil War, World War Hulk, and Secret Invasion which I skipped over the first time.

Now I read something like 10 Marvel ongoings thanks to the Incredible Hercules... so for my money he's Marvel's hero of the decade.

I can't really support Iron Man being number one either. The Knauf run was good, the Extremis arc was good, Busiek and Johns had good runs on him in the Avengers, but most of this wasn't the "Big Game" stuff. As far as the comics that most people people actually paid attention to go, he was either an incompetent asshole, or a straight up villain who pretended he wasn't, and didn't even have a mind control excuse for it this time (Guys, when The Crossing, of all arcs, does more to try and excuse a character's actions than you do, that is not good). No sale.

I'm also disappointed that Herc isn't on the list. He's always been a bonafide badass, if also a blowhard, but this was a really good decade for him. Hell, his parts were the only things about Civil War and Secret Invasion, small as the former was, that pretty much no one could dispute the awesome of. And he got a fabulously-handled comic run out of it.
