I was surprised to discover that this graphic novel hasn't been posted yet. Published in 2001 and with a (ever-increasingly unlikely) movie coming up, "Artemis Fowl" is an interesting mix of fantasy (fairies?), sci-fi (timestops and biobombs?), and action (a couple of good fight scenes) genres with a sardonic writing style. It's one of my favorite book and graphic novel series, so..

(absolute newb to both posting and HTML, please be gentle!)

Meet 12-year-old Artemis Fowl, a rather immoral Irish heir to billions of dollars and a criminal empire. Too bad his dad, whose last trip to pre-communist Russia was interrupted by a Mafia attack, is now missing. With no father and a slightly unhinged mother (more on her later), it's up to Artemis to regain billionaire status and find his father. How is he going to do that, you ask?

With a search on the internet, of course. His search reveals several arcane topics...

But the People's (fairie's) Book is written in Gnommish and isn't useful to humans...

One Internet ad amd several dead-ends finally yield a lead in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam. Artemis and his bodyguard, only known as "Butler," follow their lead to a sprite who gets rather chatty after getting some whisky from the pair. When Artemis asks for the Book, the sprite threatens him with death (always the best way). ;) Artemis is totally nonplussed.

Butler photographs each page of the Book, then injects the sprite as promised. Always 2 steps ahead, Artemis includes an amnesiac in the 2nd injection so the sprite can't talk, then leaves for Fowl Manor in Ireland to translate the Book and check up on his mother. Angeline Fowl is diagnosed with "nervous tension" after her husband's disappearance, and steadily getting worse. Meanwhile, Artemis' software isn't up to the challenge of translating the Book.

Sitting on the staircase in the manor, Artemis realized that Gnommish is similar to ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics. Several pages and sleepless days later, it's time to concoct a dastardly plan to...kidnap a leprechaun?

It's Artemis Fowl. Don't question it. :) Butler's little 16-year-old sister and maid to Mrs. Fowl, Juliet, is being introduced to the plan...

poor Butler was afraid Juliet would laugh at him...but who is this unlucky fairy who will be kidnapped by our antihero? Fairy characters to come in the next post!

(Total scans posted will be about 35.55 pages out of 112)

You think there will be ever be a Harry Potter graphic novel? Oh, has there ever been a classic graphic novel for the LotR? I know the Simpsons made a parody of it once... need to find that issue...

I wouldn't be surprised if there was a graphic novel for HP years after the movies are all out.
