Something from way back in the day--reader-submitted fashions!

Most of the reader-submitted fashions were kind of ugly, but I think the basic idea was pretty cool. I'm a little sad that this kind of feature just fell by the wayside. I guess it was inevitable, considering the way that comics evolved over the years, but still. Maybe they should have held a reader-design contest for the Star Sapphires.

I note that a lot of these designs have pants or shorts. I guess readers wanted Supergirl to wear pants even way back in the day. XD

My favorite off of this page is Nicole Schneider's.

The comment about Janet Hallinan's is kind of strange, though. Tell me, fellas--would you be keen on a lady who showed up on her first date wearing that kind of outfit?

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

I like the one on the far right of this picture.

The super-business-suit looks weird. I wonder who thought of that one?

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Yeah, it's kind of weird that they didn't bother drawing Supergirl actually wearing these costumes. Invisible mannequins, I guess.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The one from Scott Loos in Arizona is my favorite of any of these. I think it's incredibly stylish. I especially like the little scarf thing.

But Tony Gene Morris from NC had a cool idea, too. Like Supergirl, I dig the belt.

(I don't know what issue or what year this came from. I just saved them from the original scans_daily many moons ago.)

At the very bottom of the last page, I didn't realize there was a costume to go with those boots for a second...

I seem to recall her doing the barefoot thing. Also didn't she turn out to be a Manhunter robot ?

That Power Blazer uniform in the second scan looks all kinds of fug. And what's up with the Martian Munhunter cape in the first scan?

Scott Loos, once a gay, young, budding fashion enthusiast, changed his name and is now probably a top designer. (He would have to because I mean, Scott Loos? Geez) I mean, just take a look at that jaunty scarf. Scott is def. a guy that knows what women want.

Is the one she's actually wearing on the first page the one they went with? It seems to match the last page...

...and I rather like it. I wish Supergirl dressed that way these days, rather than like Super-Spears.

It's just that I saw her wearing it on the first page, and I thought that was before a winner was chosen/shown, so I got a little confused.

IIRC, she wore a different costume every issue for a while to try them out until they finally settled on the one she had for so many years with the red shorts and blue top with the puffy sleeves.

I love this. Even as a grown adult reading this, it makes me feel like Supergirl is a real person who's giving affectionate encouragement to her fans.

It's sad that, with the rise of would-be name-brand creators and editorial staff, the publishers themselves make people aware of the folks behind the curtain to the point that we're all too jaded to respond to these characters AS characters as much anymore.

Of all people, it was /b/ that came up with the absolutely heartwarming idea that Superman receives drawings of himself from kids all over the world, and he puts them all up on the world's largest refrigerator in the Fortress of Solitude. The punchline is that he doesn't even NEED the refrigerator, but that he made it himself, purely for the purpose of having a proper place to put all those pictures.

I thought it was /co/ but if you're right then color me shocked!

And yeah that was a sweet idea, why does Supes need a frig on the Fortress? He doesn't but I bet that's something he would do, I mean Starman made stick figure drawings for him in a wall and he put it up in his fortress so why not random drawings from kids all over the world.

My favorite one of the drawings has to be the one with Delirium. She made him a colorful rainbow drawing of herself with a cape and refers to Superman as "Clark Capeman" then she goes babbling about how she wanted him to have more colors and how she wants him to be her big brother.

I was trying to figure out what looked so strange about this art; then I realized I'm just not used to seeing normal-size breasts in a comic book.

Boy, am I not proud of that realization.

It's nice to see Supergirl costumes that don't expose her belly and aren't all designed to take maximum advantage of updrafts. I wonder how many women and girls read this book back then? This issue is from 1970 BTW.

Mike Christian... make the boots/stockings end a little lower and you'd have grade-A zettai ryouiki there.

I like Donna Knight's, Dennis Montgomery's and Ellen Robertson's ideas. Tony Gene Morris' would be good as well, except for those hideous red leggings. Skirts and loose-legged pants aren't really ideal for crimefighting and a billowy scarf on a superhero is basically a big red target saying "choke here" (sorry, Scott Loos, but it's true). Nicole Schneider's design would be good, if it had leggings rather than pants tucked into the boots. That's bound to get uncomfortable or come loose at the worst possible moment.
