The Hero Initiative is a charity whose ongoing mission is, in their own words;

The Hero Initiative creates a financial safety net for comic creators who may need emergency medical aid, financial support for essentials of life, and an avenue back into paying work. Since inception, the Hero Initiative has been fortunate enough to benefit over 40 creators and their families with over $400,000 worth of much-needed aid, fueled by your contributions! It's a chance for all of us to give back something to the people who have given us so much enjoyment.

Marvel recently donated 100 blank-covered copies of Wolverine: Weapon X #1 to the Initiative, and they got some of the best and brightest artists to donate their efforts to produce unique covers which could then be auctioned off.

Some of the covers are in their current auction here and a complete gallery of the covers can be seen here.

And for legality here are a few of the covers themselves.

Art Adams throwing Ghost Rider into the mix....

Fred Hembeck is ALWAYS fun! :)

This one, by legendary artist Ed Hannigan is my favourite, with a brilliant homage cover... Can you spot the special guest stars?

Last cover. Yes I can see the characters from Calvin and Hobbes at the back.

Man, I loved those Special Guest Stars so much. I read the books first when I was 7, and I found them hilarious, and I read them last week, and they're STILL hilarious.

Shame on you. Letting us lazy people scour through all the artwork for the awesome stuff when you could have posted some yourself.

I do believe it has serious competition from Agnes Garbowska in that category. ZOMG who is she and why have I never heard of her?

I could swear that I've seen her stuff on one of the paleo-S_Ds at least once. Here's her site, with much more cuteness--scroll down for the cutest lil' Red Lantern ever!

God, some of those are amazing.

I wish I had a couple hundred to spare (and an eBay account), so I could bid on some of them. ;_;

The Terry Moore and the first Darwyn Cooke (with Wolvie cutting his way out of the cover) are my favourites.

What I love about Moore's cover is that beautiful serious front cover...

And the goofy 'grr!' Toonwolvie on the back cover.

(What I particularly love about Cooke's, FTR, is the way he draws the claws.)

I imagine Calvin and Hobbes are gazing in slack jawed horror at the snowman carnage that unfolds before them. Also? Damn Wolverine's a dick...

Some absolutely beautiful work in there, that's for sure. Really digging Darwyn's work, as well as Howard Chaykin's, and Gene Colan's "Patch" throwback. Kinda disappointed in Brereton's contribution, the picture seems kind of "stiff".

Yeah, some of them were basically phoned-in sketches, while others are kind of brilliant. I don't think I've ever seen Dave Gibbons draw any of the X-Men before.

SUCH lovely covers.

Wonder if Heroes Initiative could get permision to print a book of JUST the covers?

The "Logan with his claws out and snarling at the reader"-bit got done a lot, but I still found this set of covers to be very enjoyable.

I had to think about Ron Garney's first cover. He's is a dirty, dirty man.

My personal favorite is Adam Kubert's minimalist contribution. Something about the eyes...
