[personal profile] cyberghostface posting in [community profile] scans_daily

I posted a panel from this story the other day, and it inspired an...interesting discussion. Here's the context behind it. It comes from Amazing Spider-Man #365. Tom DeFalco plotted it, Stan Lee wrote the script and John Romita Sr. illustrated it.

Mary Jane thinks about the day Captain Stacy died, in which during a fight between Doctor Octopus and Spider-Man, a chimney fell over and Stacy was crushed saving a little boy from being hit.

She's so....Sixties. In the best ways. She's like a fun, blond Veronica from Archie. Plus her going from hating the nerdy Peter Parker to liking him is pretty sweet in the comics.

I know it's a huge comics moment, and a fantastic issue but her death is one thing I would change in comics.

I don't think so. We should try and do another series of posts surrounding her. It never hurts to show more scans of Gwen.

There's a scans_daily 1.0 back-up over here:
http://brrdd.com/sd/
Viewing the contents used to require asking login/pwd from scans_daily mods, but nowadays the page doesn't demand the password anymore for some reason.

Anyway, some of the last posts of s_d 1.0 are lost forever, but the Gwen Stacy series by 5thbeatle is still there. Press Ctrl+F to search "Julio's Take On Gwen Stacy" (without quotation marks), and you should find all the parts that were posted. The comments are not saved on the back-up though, which is a pity.
I think that 5thbeatle was gonna make some kind of wrap-up post after part 19, but that was never finished/posted. Also, all the text is in one long string and hard to read on the back-up site, and if you want it to be more readable, you're gonna need to save html files on your computer and fix the html code manually by adding <p> tags. (I saved and fixed the files on my own computer, so that I wouldn't lose the series again in case that back-up ever goes down.)

But yeah, I loved that Gwen Stacy series <3 It was some of the most informative and interesting stuff ever posted on the comm.

from what I recall the only reason she hated him was because he didn't like her. She was offended by it.

It's not even that he didn't like her, it's that he ignored her (he had a lot going on at the time), and she (like Harry and Flash) assumed it was because he was a snob. That aloofness both infuriated her and attracted her to him.

Yeah, very 60s.

I always point out the Gwen/Veronica comparison! It's nice to know I'm not alone in this! I mean, look at Captain Stacy and Mr. Lodge! And MJ is totally Betty, Harry Jughead, and Flash Reggie. I miss those days.
And MJ's harlequin dress is to die for!

Meh, I don't really see the Gwen/MJ -- Veronica/Betty comparison; they actually didn't complete for Peter very much at all, despite what people claim nowadays.

Unless you're just talking about one-to-one characterization, in which case, carry on! XD

Yup. I was more contrasting Gwen as rich girl with a protective father who didn't care much for Peter/Archie, and MJ as more of the girl-next-door type (Betty). Much of Betty and Veronica isn't even competition over Archie, but just disparate personalities meshing and/or conflicting.

Fair enough. Usually when I hear the Betty/Veronica comparison people are talking about the competition stuff, which for MJ and Gwen lasted ... I dunno, a handful of issues? They did trade boyfriends, admittedly, but I don't think that's competing. XD

You know, I usually looked at that comparison the other way around, with Gwen as Betty and MJ and Veronica... but it makes a heck of a lot more sense that way. Huh.

Funny, there's another character I wouldn't kill off: Jeanne DeWolffe.
