For a Stranger, he sure has a lot of friends

Dr Thirteen used to hang out with the Phantom Stranger a lot, and they had kind of an uneasy alliance.



Dr Thirteen, of course, is the most hardened skeptic in the multiverse. Even when he's chatting with P.S., who's got the most super-special-awesome magic power this side of God, he just kind of plugs his fingers in his ears and goes LALALALALALAA NOT MAGIC NOT MAGIC FAKETYMCFAKEFAKE WITH FAKESAUCE LALALALALA. The Stranger would try to go, "No, really! Seriously!" and whip up a cloud of magic to show off, but Thirteen wasn't having any of it.

But they weren't hostile towards one another, despite having radically different perceptions about things. They could chill together and play chess like friends.





I find it hard to believe that the Stranger wasn't using his powers to cheat, though.

But even if he did, do you think Dr Thirteen would believe him?

Heh, funny that you post this. I was just about to post some Madame Xanadu, in which the Phantom Stranger features prominently. ^^

Speaking of, apparently Mark Hammill and Kevin Conroy are meant to be playing the Spectre and the Phantom Stranger in an upcoming Batman: Brave and the Bold episode. Though I'm not a 100% certain of it, due to the Spectre being restricted in use in the past due to his affiliation with God (which technically allowed to be mentioned in children's programming in case they upset someone) and due to the whole "turning people into wood and sawing them in half" thing.

I think that John Constantine once said that Dr Thirteen radiated an antimagic field or something.

Something like that. Gaimans original "Books of Magic" miniseries mentions that true magic is only there if one chooses to believe in it.

Just as Tim Hunter discovered magic because he made the choice to be open to it, so Dr Thirteen made the choice to never accept magic, and so, by the laws of magic, he would never confront it for real, some mundane explanation would ALWAYS present itself, whereas for someone who believed in magic, there was always the chance that magic DID exist.

And if he and someone who believes arrive at the same time to confront the situation?

I suppose each one would see it exactly the way they want. Dr Thirteen will see only the evidence that presents it as being something rational and scientific, but the believer will see the evidence that points to it as being magical. They could discuss their views on it, but come to no reconciliation between them, because of the way their own personal realities presented the situation to them.

Or something. I'm sleepy right now.

I like how, when he's just chillin' at home, PS takes his jacket off...but still wears his hat, cape, and gloves.

And you just know that he didn't remove the cape to take off his jacket. That cape is his security blanket.

It's just that some folks pull off the look better than others.

P.S. and Superman look awesome in their capes, but I looked pretty lame in mine, 'cos mine had Care Bears on it and wasn't quite as billowy.

Yeah, flying was cool. But I had to cut my superheroic career short 'cos I couldn't find a nicer cape. XD

PS is the only individual who is able to pull off wearing a turtle neck sweater, gloves, fedora, and cape combination. On anybody else, this would look ridiculous (especially the giant bling he's sporting)
