Romance Comics go to Hollywood

In 1949, the romance comics were fairly popular. And since there was only so many ways you can do a romance comic, you started seeing comic book publishers tweaking the formula a little, publishing titles that followed a certain theme. Hollywood Secrets was a romance comics that involved aspiring Hollywood actors.



In Hollywood Secrets #1, we find something which doesn't often show up in romance comics - sexual harassment. And it manages to avoid many (but not all) pitfalls of romance comics along the way. As usual for romance comics, writer and artist are unknown.

I should also mention that the scans I got were partially damaged. I tried my best to fixed the lettering using the highly advanced image editing technique known as "copy-paste," but there was only so much I could do.

Meh. The entire comic was like that. Besides, when your protagonists are aspiring starlets, this sort of attitude isn't that surprising.

I think my favorite line is: "I've got my sense of values back at last!"

This is rather nice, actually - you've got a couple who are genuinely infatuated with each other, a scheming 'other man' who is clearly a heel from the first time we meet him, and is never presented as anything but, and a heroine who knows who she loves right from the beginning, and isn't fooled by the big-shot sleazebag for one moment. Sure, she plays along with his romancing, but that's because she's terrified of losing her big chance. It's a nice change - going by the usual formula, MALONE would be the one she fell in love with, and PAUL would be the dull former sweetheart who just couldn't cut it. It's pleasant to read a romance comic where I DON'T feel like slapping each and every one of the protagonists.
