Yeah, I was pretty angry about the whole thing and let my anger get the best of me. I am a manic depressive myself (sorta) and I have experienced bullying myself so I can see where you are coming from. However, I do think that bullying is a problem that people should take a bit more notice to. The girls who bullied her in the first place should get some measure of justice enacted on them and it wouldn't be justice if they don't feel somewhat remorse or guilty about it, otherwise they will continue whatever they doing again. I can attest to that, I have seen it happen over and over again, if suspension, horse whipping or anything else doesn't cut it then a harder road must be taken. I don't want them to be expelled, if that means that it gives them even more time to commit other atrocities such as this, they should stay in school and suffer some punishment until they realize the depth of what they have done. Driving someone to death whether they gave her the rope or not should be punished by just horsewhipping, it should be something more than that.

I understand your anger. I really do. The German romantics had an expression "weldschmertz" which is basically the sadness that comes with comparing the world as it should be, with the world as it is.

I feel that sadness while reading this story.

The problem with punishing any of them is that, in truth, there probably was only one of the girls who really did it. Most of them were just following herd mentality. Seriously, each of them probably thought they were doing nothing more than being nasty to someone they disliked -- something all of us do from time to time. There was one, and I guarantee you it'd take someone better than Sherlock Holmes or Hercule Poirot to ferret her out, who was behind it all.

And I don't really think that she truly believed it'd go this far.

But she (they) have learned.

Yeah, I went to get some fresh air after commenting. I have cooled off now. I agree with you, there was probably just several girls following one nasty girl's lead and even she might not have wanted it to go this far. The bullies, I experienced were similar to that, one of them was my lab partner for an year and though we weren't friends, we generally got along and managed to do our experiments without fucking up and passed. It was more of the teams 'Dragon', if you are familiar with TVTropes, that was the worst of the bunch.

The problem is: it doesn't ever go away. You have to learn to deal with the sociopaths and psychopaths in society. Period. You HAVE to. No matter what you legislate, they will adapt.

What you need to do is educate your kids about them -- how to deal with them, when to ignore them, how best to combat them, etc.

Correct. Neil Gaimen said something similar while doing an interview for his book; Coraline, that we need to teach our kids not to hide from the Dragon but that they can stand up for themselves and fight the Dragon.
