Artemis Fowl 2 (where Root almost gets blown up and Artemis contemplates puberty)
Feb. 8th, 2010 09:00 pm
Re-cap: Haven's defenses are down thanks to Opal Koboi, so Holly, Butler, Artemis, and Root head for L.A. to kidnap the renegade Mulch, the only fairy to make it out of Koboi labs alive.

The thing is, it's never just that easy for team-ups in this series...

Holly's grand plan is to use the shuttle's magnetic clamps, usually used on unstable terrain, to grab Root and peel out of there before the concussion eggs blow. (In the book, Root starts saying, “Are you sure about this?! Maybe I could jump...I could make it, I'm pretty sure I could make it...”)

A couple cracked ribs and a healing later, they're on their way to L.A. Meanwhile, Foaly's not exactly helpless with Artemis' laptop, primitive though it is compared to Foaly's usual tech.

Back to the unlikely team, the group grabs Mulch from his souped-up penthouse and beloved collection of stolen Oscars (long story, no time for it here) and offer him a little deal...

Mulch shows the group how he got in the first time:

(Holly gets to do the death-defying flying)

And just as well that she's over 100 years old, Artemis. You need to get out more.
So what's Mulch's secret, devious way to get into Koboi Labs?

Yes, Artemis, it's sewage. Who said being a hero was easy?
However, Butler orders Artemis to stay behind, since he'd just be a liability anyway, and the rest of the group goes up the pipe, Mulch eating his way through what's turned into “a rather fine clay.”

Dun dun dun!!!!! Next: storming Koboi Labs!
