Date: 2010-02-10 03:16 am (UTC)As for the cost, in numerous instances (like the Metal Men miniseries and the Superman/Batman Metal Men arc) Gold was either destroyed completely or reduced to a head because Doc can't afford to rebuild him without financial backing to cover the expense (hence the inclusion of new member Copper, who has the running gag of being completely forgettable in the Doom Patrol Back story.)
Of course, they didn't wonder about these things in the Silver Age, so the Metal Men were getting busted up all the time back then (In fact, if the issue didn't end with someone destroyed or stranded in space, it was a rarity).
