Tails of the Pet Avengers #1
Feb. 14th, 2010 01:19 pmSo, yeah, I'd say the mood needs a little lightening around here lately. Howzabout a few bits from Tails of the Pet Avengers #1? Because it is made of joy and win, my friends. It's composed of six five-page solo stories, starring Throg, Zabu, Ms. Lion, Lockheed, Lockjaw and Redwing. Here we have writing and art by the likes of Chris Eliopoulos, Ig Guara, Colleen Coover, Scott Gray, Gurihiru, Buddy Scalera and Joe Caramagna. It's just more fun than should be allowed by law, really.
Here is one page from "Beginnings and Endings," by Eliopoulos and Guara. Our story opens with Throg making a grand speech to his clan, and flashes back to his return home and battling encroaching crocodiles.

Y'know, it just really isn't easy being green? *sigh*
One page from "My Enemy, My Friend," by Eliopoulos and Gurihiru. Zabu's in a hurry to catch up with Ka-Zar, but has to have a skirmish with some attacking raptors. They turn out to have been defending their kill, a lovely noble red dino, and Zabu is approached by the two cutest critters in the whole Savage Land - who, as soon as the tiger's back is turned, the raptors try to ambush.

I so sincerely hope they're going to be ongoing characters...
One page from "Terrier on the High Seas," story and art by Colleen Coover. May and Ms. Lion are on a cruise ship, and a seagull sasses Ms. L for being a lapdog and doing tricks such as playing dead for treats, instead of living by his wits like the gull does. Ms. L overhears a plot by two of the ship's cooks to make everyone sick that night so they can rob the casino. Not on a Pet Avenger's watch, buckos!

Seeing this, the more cowardly of the two thieves rounds on the other, berates him in public about the plot, and they are apprehended. Just another day at the office for Ms. Lion!
And here is one page from "Top Dog," by Scott Gray and Gurihiru. It's midnight on the moon, and only Lockjaw has detected an intruder - Mad-Dog, hired and teleported quickly in and out by Roxxon to grab a tubeful of Terrigen Mist. But Roxxon's not the only teleporter around...

Lockjaw zaps back to the moon with the tube intact, and of course the Inhumans are oblivious to how the silly dog has saved them all once again. Poor guy.
Can't wait to see the Pet Avengers back in an ongoing title!

Date: 2010-02-14 08:00 pm (UTC)Lockjaw's not a dog. He's an Inhuman who's so mutated by the Terrigen Mists that it's easier to think of him as one.
Really, I feel sorry for the guy.
On the other hand, I bet he's spoiled stupid rotten, so.

Date: 2010-02-14 10:39 pm (UTC)Lockjaw's art style seem familar too, but I can't quite finger it. Seems to be a shade from the art in the Power Gril comic.
Can't wait too see what else happens to the Pet Avengers.

Date: 2010-02-14 11:54 pm (UTC)Also, I liked the sabre-tooth tiger story.
Why aren't dinosaurs in more comics these days, anyway? Dinosaurs are cool, and they're pretty EXTREEEEEME, too, I'd say.

Well, now I'm definitely going to the other store to hunt down Phonogram #6 because I will always need Pet Avengers in my life.

Date: 2010-02-15 07:27 am (UTC)Thankfully I have a Books a Million that is closer and they get a pretty good selection of ongoing/limited series in, so maybe they'll have this since they actually had the first Pet Avengers series...

Date: 2010-02-15 07:40 am (UTC)Also, Throg is being a little unfair here, isn't he? I mean, those are ALLIGATORS. A whole horde of normal frogs would do little besides antagonize them.
