So the May solicits are out...
Feb. 16th, 2010 01:25 pmTime to find out what the hell Bendis' new Avengers series is gonna be about.

AVENGERS #1
Written by BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS
Pencils & Cover by JOHN ROMITA JR.
Variant by JOHN ROMITA JR.
Variant by MARKO DJURDJEVIC
Heroic Age Variant by GREG LAND
THE HEROIC AGE IS HERE!
There came a day! A day unlike any other...where two of Marvel's top creators teamed up for the very first time to create a bombastic new monthly Marvel comic that not only ushers in the Heroic Age of Marvel Comics but unleashes onto the world the most blockbuster Avengers team ever! Who will answer the call? And will they assemble just in time...because Kang the Conqueror is here from the future. And wait till you find out why…! Bonus back up feature: the oral history of the Avengers, part one. A brand new illustrated look at the Avengers in a way you have never seen before by series writer Brian Michael Bendis.
So there are three separate covers, and the only two they put with the solicit are the regrettable JRJR one that was posted here already, and... Land. Ow. If I track this one down, it's gonna be for the Djurdjevic cover for sure.
And I'm kind of dreading that backup feature. It seems whenever Bendis is involved, "never seen before" means "retcons to embarrass characters I don't like writing". On the other hand, Kang's back! Though topping his prior round of global enslavement isn't likely, he's always fun to have around. Plus the poor guy needs to get out more. I mean, the last time we saw him, all he did was tell the Guardians stuff.

Looks so familiar.

Date: 2010-02-16 06:56 pm (UTC)Interesting that Kang's returning here; for a while it seemed like they were waiting for Allan Heinberg to use him next, but, between this and the recent Dark Reign miniseries using ideas from his putative second run, presumably 'Children's Crusade' is going to focus solely on the Scarlet Witch plot.
Though, given Kang's nature, it's not like they couldn't still do that story later, I suppose; he's a time-traveler.

Date: 2010-02-16 09:32 pm (UTC)Wow, that's actually a better cover..
Date: 2010-02-16 07:01 pm (UTC)Lannnnnnnnnnd!!?
Cripes! That's actually a much better cover than the regular John Romita Jr version..Did we enter some kind of bizarro/twilight zone world, where everything's reversed?!? ;)
I suppose there are no women on it. And so consequently none of that tracing of the orgasmic porno face that has so often afflicted his recent work..Maybe we'll see a return to the Greg Land of old from his Gotham DC days? Now that really would be the return of something special..
Re: Wow, that's actually a better cover..
Date: 2010-02-16 07:05 pm (UTC)Look out folks THE END IS NIGH!!!
Heh!
Date: 2010-02-16 07:14 pm (UTC)Seriously though, I am hoping that we'll see a return to form for the Avengers, but it is Bendis. And the Avengers never quite feel right without Steve on the team..So I have doubts..
Hope I'm wrong though. I am kinda glad that Hawkeye and Spiderwoman are on the team. That should mix it up a bit. So that it's not just a group of Marvel's most well known characters. (Though I suppose the Hulk would have had to be there for that to be fully the case..)
