scans_dailyThe modern JSA has travelled back in time to 1951, just after the original team broke up because of the McCarthy hearings, to warn their counterparts of the timetravelling supervillain Per Degaton's attempts to change the past to erase their future.
Here Michael Holt, the modern Mr Terrific, tries to catch up with his predecessor.
And here's a bit of Wesley Dodds, who frankly doesn't get enough love here, frankly. On an interesting note, he also aubjected to a kind of prejudice, though that was more covered in the Sandman Mystery Theatre section of his continuity.
Basically his mother was Jewish and his father was a nonpracticing Catholic, and their marriage caused both sides of the family to disown them. Technically this would make Wesley Jewish too, but the behaviour of both sets of grandparents made him go for more "Eastern" alternatives instead.
The anti-semitism of the time is also covered in the flashbacks of the excellent 'the Twelve' series that Marvel was releasing for a while, though I'm not sure if that's still going or not.
Anyway, here's Wesley with his awesome girlfriend Dian Belmont. In the original comics she acted as his sidekick and partner in his detective work, though she was unfortunately kicked to the kerb for a more... traditional sidekick in the form of her nephew, Sandy Hawkins. This was also followed with a horrible spandex costume.
Later, Sandy reintroduces himself,
Meanwhile, Modern Mr Terrific has trailed the older version to New Orleans, where he's growing increasingly pissed off by the whole segregation thing. He see's the original one rush out of a casino owned by the original Roulette, holding a bundle under his arm.
Modern Mr T follows him into a graveyard, and instead of it being filled with obnoxious floppy haired vampires, which I've been lead to believe frequently out in cemetaries in that city, he comes across someone even worse,

Wesley Dodds IS Jewish (specifically because Jews trace lineage through the mother, as opposed to most cultures tracing through the father), he just chooses not to practice Judaism.
A lot of Jews are in the same boat, Jewish in culture and ethnicity (if even only "half"), but not in religion. I'm one of them.

I was trying to explain this to somebody on another comics board who kept insisting that a character who'd been retconned as Jewish didn't really "work" that way, because...
Well, first it was because he didn't look Jewish (ie-- like Richard Lewis or Mel Brooks) and then it was because... I dunno'. He didn't emulate Sandy Koufax and sit out a big battle because it was Yom Kippur?
Sometimes you just have to take a deep breath and keep trying. :/
