Patriot Games with Barbara Gordon

There was a request for scans from Babs' days as a Congresswoman. Here's a particularly cracky tale from Batman Family #1, 1975. The upcoming U.S. Bicentennial was all over the media, and comics were no exception...




Old-timers will remember the "Bicentennial Minutes" that ran on tv in that era...little 60-second history lessons, narrated by various celebrities.



Sheesh, everyone's a critic. Babs and Dick sneak away to change into costume (this was before they knew each other's secret identities) and there's a brief tussle with Benedict before he mysteriously vanishes.

He turns up again the next day, this time leading an army of Colonial soldiers intent on taking over Washington. Batgirl and Robin try to fight them off, but are overwhelmed and captured.



Cool death-trap. Suddenly, Arnold's army disappears, and his mysterious red-suited mentor announces that he's calling off the invasion. Arnold begs for one last chance, and goes after Batgirl and Robin with swords. Mr. Red Suit conjures up swords for the heroes too, just to make things even.



Ok, I think we all saw that one coming.



It's even better if you imagine Benedict Arnold's voice sounding like Saddam Hussein on South Park.



Hee hee. You know, despite what Barbara says here, I don't really remember Batman ever trying to talk her out of crime-fighting. That's strictly Dick-Dickery there.
