The Atomic Superboy - or at least something rather similar - was used for a plot of the 70s Superman cartoon (in the Superman segment, not the Superboy). It was pretty funny when Clark Kent was pretending to be unable to speak, because he'd be spitting fire.

He ended up going to Mercury, where ALL the people breathed fire.

And cured himself by giving mouth to mouth to a person who had drowned in lava.

Boy, how standards of beauty change. As far as I'm concerned, Lana is actually looking quite attractive on that one cover - there were several girls at my high school who dressed and did their hair something like that, and that didn't make them one iota less gorgeous. But it seems that she's supposed to look horribly dowdy. Weird.
