First look at Batman: Under the Red Hood

Here's the behind-the-scenes look at the Batman: Under the Red Hood movie. I look forward to your comments, S_D.




Bruce Greenwood = OK. The voice seems too gruff, but not at the Christian Bale level so that's OK.
Jensen Ackles = Hmmm. The jury's still out on that one. The line in the preview is kinda bland; I guess he'll really shine at the emotional parts.
NPH = I'll have to admit, he sounds like a total lady killer with that I'm chatty; it's part of my charm line. But in the other line he sounds a bit too young, younger than Jason. Is Dick supposed to be older than Jason?

That's just me. I wanna know S_D's reaction. :)

And for legality: a page that could've invalidated the whole Red Robin thing, from Robin 156.

Heh, I saw this after watching Justice League: Crisis On Two Earths, which I absolutely loved. Disappointed that no one posted about it on release day... :(

NPH rules, I'm glad he's such a superhero geek. He will always and forever be the Music Meister to me, though, so it's going to throw off whatever performance he gives from now on. I think he'll be great as Nightwing!Dick, and it's his chance to show some range.

The other guys sound pretty good so far, but I'll have to wait to see more than the couple clips. I like how Bruce Greenwood said that he can do raspier, but he and the director decided to tone it back a little.

In any case, I'm buying on release day.

Hm, John DiMaggio does a good Joker laugh. :) Not sure why Black Mask is talking like Tony Montana though.

The guy voicing Batman reminds me of Hulk Hogan or something, though.

I never expected Jud Winick to look so.....thin or with that kind of voice. Also did Bruce Timm fall into a Lazarus Pit? The fact that he never seems to age is starting to creep me out, I know it's none of my business, but still.

I can't help but laugh at how they go on about how important A Death In The Family is to Under the Hood and then still try playing up the mystery of who Red Hood is.

Though since I really doubt they will bring in the Time Punch that brought him back to life in the comic I am curious as to what they will do to ressurect Jason here.

From what I've heard, Winick had an in-Bat-verse idea for bringing back Jason Todd, apparently Didio scrapped it for the time-punch idea.

Take this with a grain of salt, they are just internet rumors but if they are indeed true, it's likely we will see it in the movie.

Is it just me or is 'Under The Red Hood' kinda a clunker of a title? Under The Hood worked, and something like just Red Hood would work, but putting them both together is like explaining the joke.

I think Jensen Ackles will be a good Red Hood, but whenever he opens his mouth, I just want to cry, "Oh my god Dean Winchester is Red Hood." _{And now I'm imagining a alternate universe where Sam dies and Dean becomes a masked vigilante... right. Anyway.}

Maybe it's just a sort of "cheerful == younger-sounding" effect? Dick is supposed to be somewhat less touched by the darkness than either Bruce or Jason.

Yes, Dick is always youthful in ways that have nothing to do with age and I think that's the idea.

As for the page from Robin... That is one of my very favourites. Anything were Dick and Tim act brotherly towards each other is great. Love it.

ETA: I was going to make a comment as to how it's moments like that that make it very hard for me to ship Dick/Tim (ew ew ew) and then I looked again at the bottom panel. Is it just me, or is Dick playing with the drawstring on his pants?

Beyond the fact that "Under the Hood" sucked, can't we get a more unique story than yet another Batman one? Make a Flash movie, or something!

I want to see DC's magical characters getting their own movie, Zatanna, Dr. Fate, Phantom Stranger, Traci 13, Dr. Thirteen, the Spector, in their own movie would make the TV screen explode from awesomess. Besides, the Creative Team's names would be enough to sell it and the WW fans over on CBR have been egging on McDuffie to do more Wonder woman every JLA: Crisis on Two Earths, why not adapt more from WW's history, oh heck why not a Doom Patrol movie or Perez/Wolfman era Teen Titans one?

I... I don't know how I'm going to watch--more importantly listen to that. Just watching this snippet made me feel like I was going to throw up. Jaaaaaaaaaay. I was a kid when I got into Batman, and at that time Jay was still pre-crisis Robin. Dick wasn't my Robin, Jay was. So.

God, I'm so conflicted about this movie, and yet, I can't wait for it, either.

And hey, we're getting an awesome RH maquette out of it.

Hmm, this Nightwing design is more like The Batman one than the DCAU one. Didn't expect him to have short hair but it doesn't look bad.

Huge looming towers! Noir city skylines! Man, I really want this movie to be full of scenery porn.

I don't want to be disappointed by the whole movie, but those stills featured were awesome.

One of the things I loved about the Gotham Knight DVD was the scenery porn. That was the Gotham I imagined.

My first concern is how they're going to deal with Jason's return without the Superboy Reality Punch^tm. You can't just say "he was only mostly dead. Batman isn't going to take any chances about it.

That aside... I wasn't hugely enthralled with Under The Hood in the comics. It wasn't painful to read (like most of the other major Gotham-wide Crossover Events of the last few years), but it wasn't that great, either.

I can understand them wanting to move away from TAS for this. It's a shame, but it does make sense. I just wish that didn't mean leaving Kevin Conroy and Mark Hammil out.

And apparently there's no Tim here. I guess that'd just complicate matters. But Bruce & Nightwing... I'm not sure that's the right dynamic.

Voice acting that I did hear... Jensen Ackles is underwhemling. His lines are flat. "Pretend I know anything and hope I can get away with it." Yeah, that's what it sounds like to me. NPH is cool, though. Bruce Greenwood isn't Kevin Conroy, but... he'll do.

Less thrilled with them forcibly "supercharging" the story. And adding elements of DKR. And "this is Batman as you've never seen him"? So... is it still Batman?

And the mystery is a core element? Well, it should be a big part of any good Batman story. I agree. But what mystery? What percentage of the audience will be coming to the story not knowing who the Red Hood is? And even if they don't, won't starting with Jason's death and then jumping ahead 5 years be kind of a tip-off? The mystery isn't so fun when the audience knows the solution long before Batman.

I love Bruce Timm's work. I was a huge fan of TAS. But I haven't been as happy with the more recent projects, like Wonder Woman. And... I just find myself very dubious here.

To be fair, Conroy and Hamill may be happy to be taking an extended vacation from the characters. Typecasting can be a bitch, after all (though some of Conroy's recent voice work definitely plays on his reputation).

Jensen sounds quite good. Batman's a bit too "RAWR!" and I always thought Black Mask would have a relatively normal guy voice, but I suppose they're going for more traditional cartoon villain style. I am absolutely suspending that judgment for now, because I'm so damn excited about this. I hope it all comes together fabulously. Looks promising.
