Needs author info. I think that this is after Shooter stopped writing Avengers (for a while), but I don't remember who replaced him, and it would take me forever to find my copy. I'm interested in this question because there's something about Gyrich (if I'm remembering correctly, this is his first appearance) that makes me wonder if he's supposed to be a heavily-disguised caricature of Shooter, who was already starting to create enemies in Marvel as editor-in-chief.

There wasn't really a "steady" writer on Avengers at this time, with Shooter, DeFalco, Wolfman,and Michelinie alternating out almost every other issue for awhile. Checking the credits, I think Shooter's last issue of Avengers (at least as writer, he was still on for plot-wrangling) was 178, and 181 (this one) was by Michelinie, who became the series handler until 205. Then they went back to alternating credits before Shooter became the writer again at 211.

And unlike those who wore the dreaded elven epaulets (see Chameleon Boy, Nightcrawler, et al) at least Hank wasn't in constant danger of putting out a teammate's eye if he stood up/turned around too quickly in a crowded room. :D

Tony's lecture to Gyrich about "minorities" reminds me of some yutz on a long-dead board I used to frequent. Her big shtick was crashing each and every thread about race issues to yell something clever like, "Oh, yeah? Well I'M ITALIAN!!"

While Gyrich is a dick here, I have to say that he has some of the biggest cajones out there. Dude has the gall to stand in front of a room of super heroes, none of whom like him the least (and a few of them ex super villains), and tell them most of them are getting the axe. If I were Gyrich I'd be too pissing my pants terrified/awestruck to pull that kind of shit.

I mean hell, he's lucky Moondragon didn't just go "fuck it" and turn his brains to tapioca.

This was a great period for the Avengers. I used to have it in a collection, but I lost it, drat the luck. Any chance of posting some bits from the later issues (if you have them, of course), such as the bit where Cap gets Gyrich to shut up by phoning the President, or the issue where Hawkeye becomes a security guard and goes up against Deathbird?

Henry Peter Gyrich is often written as a complex character. It's hard to tell if he's just jealous of the powers that superheroes have, or if he wants to make sure that heroes don't subjugate those they protect.
