CBR has a preview of the first issue of the newest volume of Flash.



I like that Barry uses a bow tie as a text messaging icon. Or that he doesn't seem to believe in abbreviated words; he's the Flash, he has time to write full words. (OK, I do realize that's not why people abbreviate words when texting.)

Barry manages to not only give Iris her coffee, but also the delivery guy his packages (looks like Chinese food).

It's always the little touches that get to me.

Barry only died somewhere between 2003 and 2005 given the current timeline. (He would only have appeared as Flash in the late 90s.) He'd be familiar with cell phones, and would have had one before his death, unless he was particularly stubborn about them and didn't have to have one for work. He might not have done much texting, but it wouldn't be some far out concept to him. Smart phones would be new to him, but aren't terribly hard to figure out. (At least not in concept...depending which he got, the actual features could be a problem...)

looks fun enough. I gotta say, though, I don't understand all the hooplah for Manapul. he's okay, nothing great IMO, yet people seem to be flipping for him. What's the appeal?

Part of it is a very slice of life type style; it wouldn't work that well in a horror or ultraviolent setting, but works well in a more idyllic setting. Part of it is attention to detail; for example, the third panel could easily just be Iris talking to her barrista, but Manapul went the extra step and added a decent chunk of the interior as well.

Seriously, it's just something that i think when I see it. "Oooh, pretty!" All soft and watercolory and detailed and nice. No exploitation of women either, which is always a plus in my book.

Heh! Go, Barry. I never say "LOL" or anything like that in comments or text messages, although I like emoticons. For one thing, "LOL" doesn't mean what it's supposed to mean. And I've never seen anyone roll around on the floor. Oh, and one more thing. Stay off my lawn. :)

Has the aging which Iris went through after Barry's death been reversed? Does Iris still look like she's old enough to be Bart's grandmother, and if not, why not? How old does she think she is? How does Barry feel knowing he had a son and daughter, who died a thousand years from now, after he died, but who Iris raised as normal kids until they were in their 20's, in a Universe that I'm not sure even exists anymore.

Bets on the Rogue to die being the new Trickster since he's not Silver Age (Mirror Master would be my other guess, since the Scottish MM's not Silver Age either)

And what IS Wally doing in the midst of all this? Cooling his heels somewhere?

Even after all the fuss, I really still just don't see this adding anything to the concept of the Flash, Barry was the Flash, he died heroically, someone else took his place and filled the role well. Why the hell bring Barry back back? Like Byrne's Doom Patrol it just seems to mess up more than we gain by having it.

It's easier than actually fixing it. If you've ever had a computer you've had to increasingly reboot more often you know how well that ends.

I do love Manapul's art, it's a shame that his run on the Threeboot Legion was wasted on Shooter's stories.

Iris is an interesting character to me. Born in the future, she's been killed by Zoom, traveled back and forth across time, watched her two children grow to have children of their own only to be killed (my grandmother told me once that no mother should out-live her child - Iris in this case lost two), seen her husband martyr himself, come back (but not really) and then come back for real (and as long as there was the hope that Barry would one day come back she couldn't really move on and see other guys in earnest), seen her grandson be aged into an adult and killed before her eyes (and then come back as a teen), doesn't get to see her only granddaughter who lives 1000 years in the future and has aged from a young hot married chick to an elderly grandmother to a young hot married chick all over again. Like I say, an interesting character.

Also does no one notice that Iris is young again (I mean civilians not in on the speed force making everyone young again mumbo jumbo). Weren't there people in Keystone who knew her as a senior citizen ?

Actually, I don't think Bart would notice any difference.

I love Manupul's art, but I don't think he's the best fit for a Flash title. I don't know, something about how angular he draws. It works really well for some characters, but Flashes just seem to be complemented by someone with a bit of a rounder drawing style, like Perez or Justiano.

Other than that, I'm pretty apathetic. Wally's my Flash, I just don't find Barry that interesting or see the need for his return.

I'm 21 and should be really good at texting, but someone in her forties had to teach me how, and I'm still really slow at doing it, because I stop to spell correctly, grammar-check, and put in the right punctuation.

When I bother texting at all, anyway. I usually just give up and call the person who texted me directly, because it's quicker.

It's nice to see that Sundoller is getting competition in the DCU coffee business, and Jitters is an awesome name for a coffeeshop chain.

I'm not feeling the art, but I'm looking forward to the series relaunch.
