Ares and Graces*

Following his appearance in Girl comics #1, I want to do an Ares Minipost. He's the best "new" character to come out of Marvel since Civil War and I've really enjoyed the push that he's received under Bendis and Gillen.

There is a line before me that demarcates where you stop being treated as citizens and start being treated as soldiers. It is a line that only I can see and I swear unto all of you -- once you cross it you have declare war. Against your city, against your government...and against me. And make no mistake: I love to fight wars.


We start with the Mighty Chovengers, which is probably the best Avengers story that Bendis has written in a long time.


Ares flying on the Iron Man armour just makes me think of this song. He's so peaceful.





Then to Dark Avengers: Ares where Norman Osborn asks himself "I've got a God of War on my staff. I wonder what sort of soldiers he could train?"

Considering that I wanted to write Dark Avengers as a screwy 60s sitcom, I'm delighted to see this.


And this isn't even touching his appearances in Incredible Herc (Blows from an unseen assailant have felled Wonder Man!) and ("I AM SORRY WONDER MAN I CANNOT HEAR YOU OVER THE SOUND OF RETURNING FIRE!"). I'm giggling just reading that

It's a big, big fight over whether that panel or the panel of Herc giving Cho the thumbs up is my favorite panel of the decade.

I think mine's Herc's flashback to '70s Ares: "HOT DAMN, I'M EVIL!"

I think my favorite for Ares may be that issue of New Avengers where Ms. Marvel was threatening him and he took it as flirting.

As good as those were, Thor dressed a Herc giving Herc dressed as Thor the purple nerp has to win. I'm laughing just remembering it.

That is definitely the sound effect of the decade. No matter how long I live, I will never forget that panel, and the ridiculous sound effect that it apparently needed.

I love how Ares is trying so hard to make his point in the first scans but words are hard. :(

Do Roman gods not exist in the comics?  It'd be interesting to see Ares meet Mars.

Marvelverse Gods are Greco-Roman, who go by their Grecian names because they had them longer. It's actually explained in Incredible Herc that the reason he goes by his Roman name when they don't was to make it look like he was distancing himself from Hera, because people believed she was responsible for his madness, and he let them think that. We've also had a case where Goddess!Aphrodite is very annoyed to learn of Atlas!Venus, referring to her as "a mortal bitch passing herself off with my Roman name".

Aw, but the Roman gods were different.  Mars is especially different from Ares.

Not always, Marvel has also featured Venus and Pluto, who are both Roman deities, not Greek.

That's been retconned (like everything else, it seems). 50's Venus was retconned into having been the same goddess as Aphrodite, but she got bored with going by that name because it invited too many jokes. Pluto, per Incredible Herc, stopped going by Hades because people kept confusing him with the place. Both worked for Hera, until Aphrodite lost at a "love inspiring" competition with Atlas!Venus and handed the goddesship to her, so now the goddess is Venus again, but a different one from the 50s comics.

Bendis good at dialogue? No. He used to be noted for it because he broke the endless stream of would be Claremont's who were worse at dialouge but Bendis's dialouge suffers greatly from repetiveness, and akward wording.

Still don't really care for Ares (surely Marvel has harvested enough characters from the public domain already?), but I'll admit that he's at least entertaining when played so completely ridiculous and over the top.

Y'know I have a problem with him being dead anyway. According to his Marvel encyclopedia entry, what the Sentry did to him shouldn't have killed him anyway.

You cut the post with Pym in it, if I remeber right, immideatley before my favorite moment in the whole damn post-civil war era.

He might have been a skrull, but I still loved that panel!

I really want someone to retrocon in that the Skrulls had an mental uplink to Pym the entire time, so moments like that can stay in the character's continuity.

Y'know, technically he's not a NEW character - he's Herc's arch-enemy; I believe he showed up at pretty much the same time Herc did. This USAGE of him is new; the character himself dates back to somewhere in the late '60's or so (or, if you want to be pedantic, several thousand years before that, but let's not go there).

That's why I called him a "new" character, since he got a big push as an Avenger post Civil War which was a new position for him.

I actually think my favourite Ares-bits in the Chovengers is when everyone does their thought-bubbles... And Ares' is EXACTLY what he is going to say.

I loved Dark Avengers Ares. I fell really hard for the supporting characters and the last page of it was beautiful.

I've gotten quite fond of all the Dark Avengers and they had better bring Ares back after that BS with the Sentry. (Though I do like that they had him finding out Osborn had lied and stopped fighting the Asguardians right away. It was a nice touch)

In one sense it kind of bothered me because Ares has been antagonistic to other pantheons of gods (not to mention half of the Olympian gods) rather than all buddy-buddy with them over having similar divine origins. But I suppose if he were going to regard any outsiders as kindred spirits, it would be the grim battle-happy gods of the Vikings.
