Ultimate X preview.

So now we get to find out what's up with some of the other mutants on the run. The cover art makes my eye twitch, but the art inside the book isn't that bad, even with a few somewhat WTF panels.

Dislocated hip? Check.
Boobs nowhere near the same size, even when accounting for space and angle? Check.
Creepy doll face? Check.
Stick thin arms, huge curves everywhere else? Check.
Eeny weeny doll hands? Check.

Not gonna lie, though, I'd totally steal those boots. Those are cute.

Rest of the preview here.

Taking away Jean's red hair? Bad. Giving Ultimate Jean long hair? Bad. Passing up an opportunity to establish Ultimate Madelyne Pryor as an alternate personality/alias of Jean? UNFORGIVABLE.

I kid. Sort of.

Mine is that Loeb seems to think that a sensual undressing scene is totally the window to a character's inner feelings.

That cover is Art Adams? Really?

Imma go cry now.

*sigh* Yeah, definitely not in the same ballpark, league or even sport as his best work.

Iceman. Colossus has been MIA since Ultimatum, so I'm assuming he's alive. Kitty Pryde. Storm, I think. Those are the ones that come to mind, but I know I'm missing some.

Firestar and Rogue.

I think that's it. Psylocke and Toad survived till the end of the series, but at some point in Ultimatum they died off panel.

Is Northstar alive?
suzene: (Default)

[personal profile] suzene 2010-03-12 07:04 (UTC)(link)
Unsure. I didn't count him, since he was never really on the Xavier team. It seemed like everyone at Frost's school was killed, but Colossus and Northstar were living together prior to his being crippled, so they likely were again afterward, and he was, so far as I know, never mentioned as being among the dead.

Frankly, if I were Jean Grey, I'd steam up my own mirror all the time.

SUPER GOTH POWERS ACTIVATE

Spoiler

Doesn't she still have the Phoenix "whatever-it-is" type powers? I honestly hate Madelyne Pryor and all this gothic lolita look they gave her seems more along the lines of Dark Phoenix a la Ultimate Comics.

I think so... but that was a can of worms. Like to see some explanation though why she can't just freakin rewrite time again.

I have to admit, I'm a sucker for scenes that make it clear how neat having telekinesis would be.

Which brings up the whole "did she dye the carpet to match the drapes" question. I'm blaming it on Loeb.

There's a great Classic X-Men back up vignette that is completely silent and is all about Jean preparing for a date with Scott (which also ultimately would end up "turning her" into the Phoenix). She uses her powers to unpack groceries, put on music and clothes, and even dances around with Scotts extra clothes. It's neat.

Another thing: this woman has an entirely different skull structure to Jean, with a rounded child's face and pouty lips rather than the original's square-ish jaw and thinner mouth.

Not sure I like this. We'll see. Obviously don't have terribly much faith for Jeph Loeb.
I do think Jean has a history of possible mental issues though (or I forget if it was Phoenix/her powers all along)

Just visually Jean looked neat and somewhat unique in the ultimate verse, which is a shame they had to change.
Looking at the last page in the preview, I went "Oh there's Blobs head. Oh. There's Blobs body. Over there."

Well, I think that there's a pretty god chance that that is Jean. In the UltUniverse, the X-men are publicly known figures, so growing her hair out and dyeing it, as well a dressing completly differently, are pretty good ways to go unnoticed. Combined with telekinesis and zooming in on Scott in the dead mutants page, I'd defintitely say that's Jean. And god help Quicksilver if he ever runs into her, because all the superspeed in the world isn't going to save you from an angry Jean Grey.

Also, am I the only one who finds it hilarious that there's a whole ton of dead X-men, but Jean of all people is still alive?

Feh, I think this, like the first issue of Ultimate X is decent to good. It's certainly the best thing Loeb's written in a while (I know, that's an incredibly low standard).

The idea of seeing a bunch of vignettes about what's left of the mutant race and how they are dealing with both the trauma of Ultimatum and the current status quo is interesting. It helps that there are enough people on Ultimate Marvel Earth who don't reflexively go "Aah, Mutant, kill it with fire!" that there's a chance for a reasonably balanced discussion.

I don't really agree on the arms and hands. The hands, arms, and torso at least all seem in proportion to me. If not, then that cover and I have something in common.

Wow, honey, for as mysterious as you allegedly keep yourself, you sure do encourage the voyeurs.
