I've been rereading old 90s X-Men lately and this was the first image I thought of when I saw the week's theme. (And then I couldn't remember what issue it was from and had to look back through what I've been reading.)

It's definitely gratuitous but not exactly eye candy, at least IMO. I remember my het guy friends mocking this page back when it first came out, so I know I'm not the only one who looked at this and went, "Um, I don't think that produced the effect you were going for..."

I'm reading all the X-Books from the 90's at the moment, and there is actually some strong material in there. It's just the constant creator switches and Onslaught that really fucked things up.

I mean, don't get me wrong there is some really god awful terrible stuff, but a surprising amount of good.

What's good? I tried to read "Mutant Genesis" three times, but it always defeated me.

I'm enjoying Loebs run on X-Force a hell of a lot more than I expected. Niceizas run that preceeded it was fun, but really let down by Liefeld artwork and the horrible imitators that followed.

Ellis' Excalibur is interesting, but truthfully I never really enjoyed the series.

X-Factor was excellent while PAD was writing it, it dropped off a bit when J.M Demattais (?) took over, but was still prety readable. Don't bother after that though.

Gambits solo series (the ongoing one) was top notch, but that's very late 90s.

Uncanny is generally pretty good if you can get a post-crossover deck clearing exercise (quiet and talky type issue), or just a general quiet and talky issue. But for the most part both the core titles are pretty dreadful after a certain point. And despite a bright spot after Lobdell and Niceiza leaving, with Kelly and Seagle taking over, editorial made sure the core titles remained screwed over and unsatisfying.

Age of Apocalypse, of course.

And Generation X is great pre and post Hama.

What kept defeating you about Mutant Genesis?

It took a few attempts to figure that out. It wasn't just the eyeball-gauging art, although that killed my first attempt when it was published. It wasn't just the clunky dialouge. It wasn't just the nonsensical plot (who successfully takes over a country -- and then goes back home?) I finally realized that the thing that really made it unreadable was the complete breakdown of the Marvel Method of making comics. I had seen comics where the artist and writer had different ideas before, but I have never before or since seen a comic where the writer and the artist were fighting a duel to the death with each other. After that, I read it with a sort of "trainwreck" fascination which helped a lot, but I still couldn't get through the third issue.
