This is from Green Lantern Corps #46, by Peter J. Tomasi and Patrick Gleason.

Kyle gets dragged into the refrigerator (which has a Black Lantern symbol magnet)...

Alex says that Kyle is responsible for her death and tries to force him to kill himself by using his own ring against him.

"...I won't!"

Kyle destroys the fridge, then gets the Indigo Tribe's Munk to help him sever the connection with the Black Lantern. Kyle tells Alex to rest in peace.

"Because your love helped make me a better man"

...Eesh. Though I guess there's no real line they could make that make it NOT sound like that's the only way to give Kyle character.

Still, didn't they already do the fridge shtich in another BN tie in?

The rest of his dead loved ones tried to off him on Oa, but I don't know if there was a fridge involved.

They made a BL construct one and tried to shove him into it as a one-panel joke. Obviously editorial liked it.

I'haven't read the issue yet but I'm going to go ahead and guess that having Alex actually show up with the Refridgerator is the writer's way of aknowledging that this was what the original story was all about and taking a meta jab at the entire WiR problematic.
That's how I read it anyway.

Lampshading the trope doesn't make it any better, especially when Kyle sums it all up by repeating that the most important thing about her life (and death) was how it affected his character.

As a big fan and shipper of Kyle's relationships with all three of his exes, I will say this made me happy ... even if the dialogue on his side made me cringe. The issue was good, felt a bit rushed but I still got emotional on a couple of scenes with Kyle's and Guy's experiences.

I had the exact opposite reaction. Kyle's reactions and handling of these scenarios feel too distant for me to really do anything but roll my eyes. They're by different writers, true, but compare this to Donna's visible anguish at having to destroy even a fake version of her family, or Firestorm's horror at seeing the BL version of his predecessor tormenting his girlfriend. Even Sinestro, collected badass that he's been in this arc, had a more feeling scene than Kyle's had with any of his lost loved ones. And even as much as I gagged at the whole thing with BL!Jade, this one comes off the worst for me in terms of just being pat.

You see, I could go into an entire rant on Tomasi's Kyle and how much I disagree with his entire interpretation, but the way I saw it was this was a step up from the entire (personally enraging) interaction he had with Black Lantern Jade, and how she was used as a prop for his current tru luv. Krul definitely made the Donna scenario gripping, and Firestorm had one of the most disturbing and distressing scenes in BN.

I think the Jade one came off as worse to me, this one, I guess, satisfied me in the sense that there seemed to be just a tad bit more expression from him. In the end, though, his entire reaction DID seem to be "Oh god that's horrible, anyway you have to die, ilu bye"

Maybe he's just more hardened after the SCW and everything he's gone through? I have no idea. The dialogue was meta-bad though, too. Yes, the existence of women in men's lives is always to make them a better person and to teach them to grow up. Then it's off with them!!

I really wish we got Kyle's mother, Maura/Moira, to come into this, or he had a confrontation with Black Lantern Donna Troy ...but the way his interactions were written with Jade and Alex make me a bit grateful I guess that that isn't so.

(On another note, I am so miffed I did not see Starfire vs. BL!Donna, or BL!Ice vs. Fire)

Gotta agree on the dialogue, since that seems to be where most of my annoyance is coming in. It's like they had to cram in some kind of apology, but couldn't be arsed to make it sound...fuck, anything but bland and trite with this shit. This was, like, breakup by text message level of seemingly not giving a damn. A Hallmark card sounds more sincere than this.

I think it wouldn't have looked as bad if it wasn't compounded with his previous encounter with Jade that we didn't like. When I look at this more isolated, it comes off a bit better to me, but still nothing engaging.

There's a point. I have a little more trouble looking at it as a solitary point, but I can see where you're coming from. Disconnecting it a bit from the rest of his encounters, it just feels... necessary. Not necessary as in vital, but more like... um, fuck, having trouble with imagery here. Booze is kicking in. Necessary like... boring home movies. You're supposed to get an emotional, or even just a sentimental nudge, but all you can think about is how stupid some of the things people are saying are.

Perhaps Kyle isn't reacting as strongly to Alex because he already dealt with Jade, blew himself up, got resussitated, and dealt with Red Lantern Guy today. He's probably getting used to all this wrenching emotions shit. That and the fact that he's had way more time to deal with Alex's death and has beaten the crap out of Major Force a few times.

I think it's less that I want a super strong super NOOOOO reaction to Alex and just more of one that I'm more ... satisfied with? Something more heartfelt? It doesn't mean it needs to be dramatic or emotionally exhausting, but this is paired up with a very unsatisfying rushed death, rushed resurrection, rushed encounter with RL!Guy, and a cringeworthy encounter with Jade.

So I guess I wanted the Alex thing to be a bit better. I still liked it the best out of everything that's happened to him in Blackest Night, which has been a crap event for Kyle in my eyes, but I can see how other fans would like it I guess :|

See, applying a relative scale makes everything better! <3
I was expecting grosser things from Alex and the fridge, this was decent in the end, even with the melodramatic dialogue - that might have sound a little less forced if written as thoughts instead of proper dialogue but let's not be too much of a prick.

Visually, i really like the 'world inside the fridge', distorted and antigravitational. It's cool.

Except he sounded like this with the other Lanterns of his exes (you know, the point where it still should have been some kind of huge shock for him), only with an added layer of "You're not the real things, but I'm gonna talk to you like you are, and on that note, I got a girlfriend now who's more awesome than any of you dead bitches were anyway," ick painted on top of it.

Though, now that I think about it, I probably should be glad Soranik wasn't in this scene, or we probably would have gotten that again. The scene's bad enough as it is with the whole "hey, your unwilling sacrifice made me a better person" bullshit.
