Seriously, they have one of the most fucked-up and sweetest relationships in comics.

The strange part about it is that it feel very genuine and delicate and true. Nothing is forced or contrived for a plot.

When I first read this, I was so touched. Then I thought about it and said to myself, "Wait a minute. Some murderer just arbitrarily decides to adopt a grown woman and she's totally on board? That's weird!" And then I went back to the awwwing because 'fucked-up but sweet' is par for the course with Secret Six. And I love the gentle giant trope.

I sure hope Bane doesn't go the way of Knockout. I adore the way Simone writes him.

Well, her initial response was about as WTF as you'd expect. It took her a while to come around. (Though still less time than you'd think just by looking at Scandal's history, from which I'd have given a rough estimate of never, give or take a couple weeks).

Only a teensy bit WTF though. In fact, she seems to barely notice it until the 'one ice cream' comment and from there it's pretty much just bemusement.

Which is okay with me because it's written well enough that the transition doesn't seem awkward.

Well, yeah, but he's not real obvious or overwhelming about it right out of the gate either, so a teensy WTF is exactly as much as you'd expect.

Yes. She's there because SPOILER ALERT she has a "get out of hell free" card that Neron made. The Six were commissioned to go fetch her and it for cash.

She was effed up. Some teeth missing and whatnot. But not by this team. She fought on their side in the end.

Truthfully, it was a pretty honorable - even, dare I say, almost heroic - death. Which means that personally, I'm more conflicted by it than pleased. On the one hand, in a genre where important, awesome women with history and team headlines get abused or crippled or killed in tears or driven mad with power on a regular basis, seeing a character who is not important or awesome - who is, in fact, a murdering rapist and the refined, one-woman symbol of an utterly heinous storyarc - get a dignified, respectful, powerful ending is maddening.

On the other hand... this is a genre where women get abused or crippled or killed in tears or driven mad with power on a regular basis, and I can't say it could possibly have ever sat well with me to send off Tarantula in a vile or abusive way either, because no matter how much she individually might deserve it, you can't separate that from the wider trend, or how disgusting that is as a genre-wide phenomenon. So Gail's choice to deliberately buck that trend, even, yes, with this character of all characters, is also a profound relief.

So, yeah, I wouldn't call it an uncomplicated sop for Tarantula haters, at any rate. It's far too nice to her for any kind of straightforward schadenfreude, if that's what you're after.

I *heart* Scandal/Bane's relationship. It's like a contradiction of the violence that each of them is capable of and yet they are so sweet and caring towards one another.

Also, Bane needs to be naked more often. A LOT more often.

Oh, if only...

They did a whole THING with potential romance between Talia and Bane, with Bane learning several of Ra's Al Ghul's secrets and slaughtering all his guards before getting taken by Ra's himself in a profoundly awesome way. Plenty of parallels between the two of them, and he Ra's even claimed that Bane was the perfect man for his daughter (who had stopped liking him by now)...

I really wish I knew how that story ended.

Well, mind you, I got this story from scans in S_D of old (part of the whole 'Rumble in Gotham' series of posts that were SOOO good), but as I recollect it Talia and Bane met while hunting the same person for different reasons. And they seemed to hit it off. Sexy fun times, Bane gradually fell for her, she didn't seem to like that her dad approved of him, she cut things off and called him a beast... Honestly, Talia's gradual distaste for Bane was like the only weak point of the story. They never gave a real reason why she stopped liking him.

But the rest of the story was so damn good that I can overlook it.

Takes place during Battle for the Cowl (Secret Six #9). The city has fallen into chaos because of the absence of Batman. Ragdoll, Catman, and Bane are going around Gotham saving children and ripping the heads off the baddies out of respect for the Bat. Catman goes off somewhere and hands this kid to Bane to watch. At first she flips out because, well, giant evil-looking wrestler guy! But later the cuteness above happens.

I recommend you check out the entire issue. Very funny stuff.
