Sorry for the delay. On this very special edition of Marvel/DC mash-up, we have the two greatest magicians of their respective houses, Drs. Strange and Fate (and a little Charles Xavier via secret ID thrown in for good measure). Join us for this (slightly) crossover-plot relevant issue of...





So, this whole business of the Marvel and DC universes meeting up and eventually merging partially involved this new character, Access. While ostensibly having the powers of a reality-altering god, he's currently just managed panic-induced teleportation. Naturally, such power being held by a red shirt draws the attention of our "hero."

Meet Dr. Strangefate, PhD of Occult Pimpology.

Strangefate catches up his minions (and the readers) on what exactly has been going on.

Strangefate dismisses the others to have some "alone time" with Access. (note the occult pimp cane)



Despite the Rite of Overdone Symbolism, Access does not have the means within his corporeal being to avert the collapse of the merged universes. Strangefate lets him go so he can angst in private bemoan the burden of his pimping prowess.

Next time will feature selections from what may be the most ridiculous (i.e. spectacular) concept yet... CHALLENGERS of the FANTASTIC

Also, it's amazing that without irony, the chosen agents are laid out on their first page from most to least clothed, and they are mixed m-m f-m f-f. Classy.

Also, Strangefate is cool, but do they do any other amalgams of super high power dudes? Who does Galactus get merged with? Thanos? The Spectre? Ghostrider?

Thanos gets merged with Darkseid to become Thanoseid. As I recall, he is opposed by Thorion of the new Asgods.

Ghost Rider was merged with the Flash as Speed Demon. (Possibly with other characters - several characters were merged multiple times.)

Spectre was actually involved in creating the Amalgam universe, therefore never merged with anyone.

Well, he might not actually have merged but his representation in the Amalgam (maybe to further fool the Brothers) was most likely the other part of Night Spectre (Nightmare/Spectre). From the Speed Demon story in fact.

Jade Nova is confusing. She's a combination of Marvel's Nova with Kyle, Guy & Beatrize at the same time?

Then again, this one shot also mucked up the merger between Doc's Strange and Fate by making the man behind the mask Charles Xavier...

Judging by her real name, she's a combination of Kyle Rayner and Frankie Raye, Nova.

It's a little weird how Jade Nova's characterization doesn't seem to match either of the two characters she was amalgamated from. Same goes for the White Witch.

It's the ATTITUDE, silly. Tough girls always flick away their cigarettes before breakin' out the whoop-ass. It's like 'OK, break time's over - you're goin' DOWN, MFer!' (Plus, judging by the evidence here, she's a bit of a chainsmoker anyway, so she's ALWAYS lighting cigarettes, just in case she DOESN'T have to get involved in a fight.)

I haven't read a lot of the Amalgam comics, by Dr. Strangefate is definitely my favorite so far. I mean, the idea for the character is more than cool enough to stand on its own. A mysterious, all-powerful magician type who lives atop a huge tower overlooking the city, has a genie manservant and regularly sends various superpowered operatives forth on missions against supernatural evils, all the while manipulating the situation like a chessmaster? Sweeeeeeeeeeet.

Merklynn of Prysmos was the "Merlin" type wizard in the excellent 1980's toon series "Visionaries". OP and quick summary of scenario can be seen here

Longer version - On a distant human (or close enough) populated world, a strange alignment of their three suns causes many of the laws of science to fail, and the laws of magic to restored. With mechanics, electronics and electricity out of commission, their high-tech society falls and feudal barbarism returns in short order.

Merklynn, who has waited a thousand years for the return of magic, sets a series of challenges to any who seek to claim one of a number of magical staffs which grant specific power to the wielder. He is neutral about HOW they are used, so long as they are used, and so we end up with the Spectral Knights, who seek to use magic to restore justice and peace, and the Darkling Lords, who use their magic to enforce their fairly tyrannical rule.

As he is the only one who can recharge their magic, the rather Machiavellian Merklynn frequently calls on both teams to do his dirty work, sometimes setting them against each other, sometimes making them work towards the same goal. As the series progresses both sides chafe under this, and Merklynn gets a little peeved that they're not showing due deference to him.

It's a great little series, sadly lasting on 13 episodes. A second year of the nifty action figure line was planned, and would presumably have led to new season, but alas, Sunbow Animation (Who had made Transformers, GI Joe, Jem and many others) went out of business, so the series was cancelled.

Sounds interesting - I'm surprised I haven't heard of it. Is it out on DVD or anything?

I think I have the first three issues of the Marvel produced comic around here somewhere... IIRC, it was weird because the comic didn't have any payoff at the end of the series. It was just "sorry you'll just have to guess at the rest of the adventure, we had to close up shop. See Ya!"

Maybe I'll make it my first post ever instead of having lurked these past 3 years.

Cool! As those comics are also the only place where Galadria and Virulina got their own magic spells and so were less limited by being the only entirely aquatic totem-forms of any of the Visionaries.
