The CosmicBookNews has the preview for Thor #608. The fight against Osborn and the forces of H.A.M.M.E.R. at the gates of Asgard isn't the only fight in town.






I do like that the Asgardians are coming off as people who plan and think and show bravery in all its forms. And if you read the previews, you see another trouble sign on another god of war.

Motto, I was thinking the god of war will fall. Isn't Ares already dead? Unless Tyr bites it and they bring back Bill as God of Heroes and move war over to someone else, that would be good.

Who is the Norse God of War in Marvel? In Norse mythology it's Odin, Tyr is victory and single combat and justice, not war.

There are a LOT of war gods in the Norse myths, but Tyr is usually listed as the god of war, and has that role in Marvel, although usually as a villain.

Of course, there's some evidence that Tyr used to be the sky god in the Norse pantheon too, until the Odin cult grew in prominence.

For example, his name was originally Tiu (from whence comes Tuesday) which comes from the same PIE root as Zeus & Jupiter.

And he's strongly linked to Fenris (via his arm), but in Ragnarok, he has to settle for Garm, who has almost no other appearences in the sagas, and smells like a retcon added so that Odin (and Vidar) could battle Fenris.

Actually it makes perfect sense. He'd already paid off his betrayal of Fenris with the loss of his hand, so there would be no compelling need for them to fight again.

Actually, I think Tyr was called Tiw in Englisc, if I remember right.

And to me, Garm seems more a Germanic analogue to Cerberus, where Fenrir seems more like a canid version of the Python.

Personally? I find Hindu mythology much cooler. Can't fault guys who worship a man with an elephant head. XP.
