Amalgam Universe Part 7

Last time, there was mention I'd be including the worst Amalgam issue. This is NOT that issue.

Instead, we combine the tragedy and horror of the transformation of Dr. Kirk Langstrom aka Man-Bat and the bizarre and magical ascension of the Man-Thing to get...

So the corpse of a crook named "Huggy" is attacked and mutilated by a creature that was once scientist Kirk Sallis. Detectives Bullock and Montoya (not much different from their regular appearances) are on the scene, when they're startled by an enormous shadow swooping overhead.

Bullock goes to Mrs. Sallis' home to inform her of the return of her husband. At the same time, somebody's calling in a crew against Bullock.

While they get the jump on him at the Sallis' home, he evades enough to take out some of the assailants and draw out the ringleader into the building. Bat-Thing seems to be back for more.

"Oh, gee, thanks, detective. I'm only trying to save your life and all. No, no, I've got super-healing, it's not like I can feel it or anything. Ass."

Pretty interesting overall. Nothing too over-the-top, actually a little flat in places, but pretty decent horror/noir mash-up. Now, could this really be an ongoing series? Depends on what other elements are brought in.

Next time we'll see the Amalgam U's two best hit-ladies go up against the great Question of their lives.

Find out what (and who) it is tomorrow in... ASSASSINS

I have become far too obsessed with analysing that picture at the end!

Look at Mrs Sallis in her cocktail dress and pearls and her daughter with a bow in her hair. Now look at Mr Sallis, with in his sweatervest, rolled-up sleeves and premature balding. Look how he isn't sitting quite in frame, how he has to lean over to fit. It's less "memories of my beloved happy family!" and more "to be honest we were already heading for divorce".

Life's tough when you're actually Charlie Brown.

According to a lot of fan art I've seen Robin is very familiar with Bat-Thing.

"What knows fear, burns at the touch of the Bat-Thing"

"ALLLLLLFRED.... IT BURNS!!!! IT BURNS!!!!"

"Calm down Master Dick, I have the burn-salve here, now just bend over so I can apply it."

I think I just realized what you consider to be the worst issue of Amalgam.

And I think I'm going to agree with you.

So I was right...

Aww, but I loved that one. I still can barely tell what's going on in Assassins. What with the amalgam being also gender inverted for Dare the Terminator.

Bullock looks African-American here.

I was thinking that, too. In fact, he reminds me of Frank McRae.

Were there any prominent African-American police officers in the Marvelverse at that time that could have been... fused with Bullock?

His name is apparently Clark Bullock, if that helps narrow his Marvel half down.

I found http://www.io.com/~woodward/chroma/amalgam.html and it doesn't mention who his other half is...

Only one I could think of is Code: Blue's Lt Stone. But his first name isn't Clark, so...

Bat-Thing? Why not Swamp-Man?

Because that would be like merging the Squadron Supreme with the JLA. What's the point of combining two characters who are pretty much identical anyway? The result would be pretty much indistinguishable from either character solo.

Besides, it leaves room for Bat-Thing's arch-enemy, the Swamp Lizard!

Bat-Thing: most unfortunate name ever, y/y?

Well, Man Thing is just a bit more suggestive so I can't fault it.
