His completely disgusted expression cracks me up. Anyway, Brainy is fine, what with the invulnerable force field and all, and promptly sets up intensive search programs for Lyle. Which leads to this...

This amuses and frustrates me, big time. Mostly because it was said many times before that Lyle in this 'boot is canonically gay, but they always backed down from saying it. (http://www.slushfactory.com/features/interviews/jeffmoy.shtml)

This was interesting, but then this scene was never followed up on. I saw that as a bit of a cop-out: why put it in if it isn't going to be dealt with? (A subsequent issue was a 'downtime' issue that was horrendously bad, and didn't even go near this. It was frustrating as hell.)

Also, yeah. The post-ZH Legion is "my" Legion, as much as I have one, but it really was frustratingly heteronormative, particularly in comparison to the tail end of the preboot Legion. Lyle was all we got and we didn't even actually get him.

My Legion was was Threeboot, but I feel pretty much the same level of disappointment, with the only queer character being a cameo by Giant Lad's brother and that only coming by exposition from another character.

They didn't have much time to follow it up. This story-arc ended in issue 30, the series was cancelled by issue 38.

(. . . Also I am totally mis-remembering the order in which things happened because I remember Kon-El being involved in the discovery of Querl's picture stash, so that means it happened after this scene.)

Regarding Lyle, just because he's gay doesn't mean he'd date Brainy. Lots of people otherwise attracted to men have declined to date Brainy, the boy comes with more baggage than Mogo on vacation and his romantic history in all incarnations has mostly consisted of pining for whomever on the team can best kick his ass at something.

Oh, this wasn't about them dating so much as I wanted on-panel confirmation about Lyle, that I was waiting for for some time.

When it came to Brainy in earlier discussions I always figured Lyle wasn't into Frozen Food.

That might make an interesting character (or even species) trait. Brainy (or any Coluan) isn't attracted to male or female, he's just attracted to people better than him.

That seems like a plausible Coluan-trait to me! He would probably justify himself as saying that it's evolutionary sense to want to pair off with the best available mate.

It'd be an excellent trait for a species that genetically engineers all its babies in artificial wombs anyway, which I am pretty sure the Coluans do in some continuities. You don't have to worry about species, let alone gender.

While this is entirely true (well, the last bit is oversimplified but aside from that), you have to admit that the look on Lyle's face in the post-kiss panel is not that of one who is unreceptive to Brainy's advances. Brainy is not the only one who likes a challenge!
