VA VA VROOOOM. To throw in some fun with the recent depressing crap befalling my beloved Titans, I am giving a "Pre-New Teen Titans" spotlight on each of the Fab Five (and even some of their pals! Duela! Lilith! Mal!). Of course, I am starting with Wonder Chick.

See how Wally's crush on her REALLY was! See her indulge in great Donna-dickery when she finally rejects him! See the Donna-Roy relationship without prophecies!! See how she's not a wallflower in any way lol Titans20lol. See her initial pettiness toward Lilith, her first roommate, Sharon -- and her relationship with Hawk go from amiable and amorous to antagonistic!!!

Also witness her worst fear -- TO BE SEEN AS UNFEMININE!!!!!!!!!!!

No more than four pages from each issue, and about fourteen issues are featured!




When Lilith, the team psychic, accidentally taps in to every Titans' worst fear, she and Mister Jupiter make the Titans face these fears -- or else they might overcome them in battle!

Wonder Girl's fear? To be seen as unfeminine. Once she steps through the doors of a salon -- her "journey" begins. Suddenly, she's on a train!

AND

The government needs her to crossdress ... FOR JUSTICE!!! You can see how this might be her downfall in battle, or ... something.



I have to say, I'd hit it.

Her inner thoughts are hilarious.





And our heroine awakens from her nightmare!!!


Now, we delve into her relationship with Hawk (Hank Hall), and how it ...um. "Evolved." I actually LOVED this relationship, and it's too bad that upon his inevitable revival, I'm certain it will be forgotten.



DRAMA!!!

Wonder Girl has been having AMAZON INDUCED weak spells. This has an ill effect on her in battle, obviously, and here is Hawk... to save her! On their first meeting!



Sparks fly! The flirty dame is bombarded with compliments from this hot-headed hunk, and we know that Donna likes 'dem bad boys.



Speedy, of course, ain't too pleased.



Donna goes off with Hawk, which makes Speedy PISSSSSED because she is the only girl so they all must fight over her!!!

TEAMING UP OCCURS, CARDY-PENNED DONNA CONTINUES TO BE GORGEOUS JAIL BAIT


Bad stuff happens, however! And then they meet up with the rest of the Titans.



This is Haney/Cardy-era "deepness" for the forming of a crush. On Donna's side.



Yeesh, Roy really was impulsive and possessive back then! Much moreso than Wally, who actually had quite a passive crush on Donna. Roy's behavior in Titans 23 should have been more akin to Wally's, I reckon.

Don't worry, Roy. This is as far as Hawk's and Donna's relationship got: Posturing at each other like two macho frat boys.






CUTENESS AHOY!!



As you can see, the team was not very mean to Garth at all. In fact, he was actually shown to be quite more badass than the rest of the Titans, talking sense into them when they got all wussy and self pitying and stuff.

BOY CRAZY DONNA!!







Yes, not a wallflower. She was always topping Terry and Kyle, too.

HENYWAY, let us witness the Wally-Donna crush in Part 2, which gets pretty interesting in retrospect if you consider Bryne's slaughtering of Donna's character canon and how he reconstructed her from his memories and perception of her, it makes Donna's relationship with him quite...tense.

Cardy and Adams put today's artists to shame. (Even Perez, though I am still a fan of his overall run.)
I think that, on top of everything else that was trashed in the recent Roy-related events, maybe my least favorite retcon is the insistence that Donna and Roy had been this 'couple' forever. Donna was kind of 'boy crazy' back in the day (as only a girl raised on an island of women could be), and was NOT the type to be saddled with one boyfriend (Roy's awesomeness notwithstanding) when there was an entire world to explore!
Thanks for the trip down Memory Lane! (Can't wait for Lilith!)

Looking at a few of these pages, though, I know I've either seen pages these were swiped from or vice versa. (I'm thinking DEADMAN, for one) Leading me to wonder, did Cardy swipe from Adams or did Adams swipe from Cardy?

Of course, that's leaving aside that, the more I see Adams art at the time, the more I notice him even swiping from himself.

I've never noticed the 'swiping', other than that certain artists have a style that is their own. Adams was often stepping into other artists shoes, though, and there may have been some intent to make the transition easier so as not to jarringly interrupt the flow of the title.

I don't understand how Donna is boy crazy coming off an island of Amazons. Don't they pretty much hate on men there? She should be skeptical of men, not wanting to jump their bones at a moments notice. It's not like Diana was boy crazy so where did she learn that having a boyfriend was the hippest thing in town?

Donna didn't grow up her entire life on Paradise Island. She also was not born an Amazon, meaning she wasn't the reincarnated soul of a woman like so many others there, and thus is different by nature. They don't hate on men -- it depends on what incarnation and who is writing the Amazons. She just was enamored with boys and excited by them, which I can see. She was a teenage girl and it's not like it lasted long. After a couple of years, it died down completely and she became much more skeptical of men. It was mostly a rebellious teenager thing.

At the time these were written Donna HAD spent her 'Wonder years" on Paradise Island, and the Amazons hadn't been retconned into the Perez origin of new bodies for murdered souls (though I like that origin!), so her first intro to flesh and blood guys was in these pages. Hormones alone would have superceded any Amazon preconceptions. The fact that the Titan guys were actually NICE back then probably helped Donna's adjustment.
