Some Blue Beetle that makes me smile and some Dick Giordano Canary

So sad to hear about the passing of Dick Giodano who drew a beautiful Canary and Green Arrow.



I've been rereading some Blue Beetle and this page from issue 7 always cracks me up.


And as icon_uk noted, the great Dick Giordano has passed away. He drew many of the early Black Canary/Green Arrow stories including "The Plot to Kill Black Canary" from Action Comics 428 from 1973. In this issue the relationship between Dinah and Ollie took a turn that we're still suffering complaining about experiencing the after effects of today.

loved that blue beetle moment :) also loved that batman is being so patient with Jaime

The thing about Batman is, he actually is really good with kids (and by extension, teenagers). Some writers go with the "Bruce was so tramuatized by seeing his parents killed he never emotionally matured to a "normal adult" level, so he relates better to children" angle, which I really like when it's well-written.

I don't think I can quite agree with that assessment. He understands kids yes, and seems to fundamentally like them for their lack of guile, deception and (in most cases) criminal intent, but he doesn't relate to them at their level, he always comes across as the parent/stern uncle and they respond to that.

Yes. You can fanwank that the reason that Dick grew up so different from Bruce even though he saw his parents killed too is because Bruce deliberately raised him not to go the all "dark, grim" route he took.

And then of course there is the fact that Batman has always been one of Captain Marvel's biggest boosters (whereas conversely WW and Superman have sometimes condescended to Cap) and in some ways trusts Captain Marvel even more than Superman (Cap being Supes' power equal but Bats doesn't seem to have a zillion reserve contingency plans like he does if Superman goes rogue) because not only is Billy Batson a "sunny" character who makes him smile but BECAUSE he is a child, Bruce can seem to deal with him better.

I also loved the other scene with them, where he tells Jaime to tell his parents that he met Superman instead "because people like Superman", and then the flash forward to the present has him doing just that. It's so cute!

Or rather, his parents *reaction* as if he had, the actual story being cut, which just made it even more-so ^^

It's actually a great way to paint the general atmosphere of the non-super DCU too, especially because his parents are all "well, if SUPERMAN told you to do that... we guess it's ok."

Blue Beetle was the best kind of comedy in that it was funny while at the same time telling the truth.

I just don't understand how he makes that goatee work. I mean, no one else can pull that off. I still think it's goofy as all hell, but I can't imagine him without it. Oh, Ollie.

Facial hair is usually one of the ways to make a character look older. That Mr. Giordano (and especially Neal Adams) could make Ollie NOT look older with a goatee was indeed a talent.

I'm a huge fan of Ollie and Dinah (real Ollie and Dinah, not the crazy Skrull replacements they've been publishing the last few years) and I love that last page. I assume we all know she LET him get that hammerlock on her, yes?

And RIP Mr. Giordano, who always drew good judo, among other things. May we all leave behind such a great and influential contribution to art and to the world.

No, I think it was referring to the fact that there were delays with Infinite Crisis, and that this story line was one of those slow-burners that took a few monthly issues to resolve.
