you have no idea how ticked off i was that they brought back hank hall (who i hate) and left holly granger dead! holly granger was such a unique female character in comics. they killed her off to bring back a cardboard cutout angry male character?!?!?!

i'm pretty sure the correct words to express how i feel about this aren't allowed in this community.

not even bringing back one of my favorite characters in detective comics doesn't make up for this fridging! yes, i said fridging! they killed off an awesome female character to bring a crappy male character back!

I don't think Hank Hall's type exists in DC at the moment.

Except Hank wasn't a cardboard cutout angry male character, read the Kesel Hawk and Dove run and you'll see there was more to him than that.

And I'm not sure what you might mean that Holly was unique. In her few appearances she never even seemed to be a character, she was practically a Cousin Oliver.

I love Gail Simone's work, but pulling out the "She's my half sister who I have apparently always known about, but somehow managed to never mention, nor even suggest might exist, and whilst involved in a long term heroic partnership with a guy for whom siblinghood was of enormous significance to him" was on a hiding to nothing from the outset.

(I'm tempted to give her a pass because of the hideous Liefeld art on her intro story because frankly nothing good could come from that)

Holly Granger was a redhead with an accent and that was enough for me to like her, but this is like the second time she died (albeit the last time was implied and didn't really happen). She wasn't used much before and she likely would've wound up in limbo or doing random cameos if she lived.

I'm a bit pissed Hank's back, not because of Holly (who I kind of liked, but wasn't really attached to), but because he spent more than a decade as a villain - and a barely restrained psycho for some time before that.

Hal Jordan, who went evil at about the same time, had a series where he tried to redeem himself, had a series introducing a retcon that removed, or at least lessened, his culpability, and still isn't trusted by a lot of people.

Captain Atom, who was evil for about a year - and that period was half-removed from continuity even as it was happening - required a running retcon, a brief period of re-earning trust, and even feels guilt about what he did, even with the 'not in his right mind' retcon.

Hawk...well, it's possible they'll actually deal with his time as Extant, but there's no sign of that in his scenes in this issue. He looks to be a bit angrier than usual when Don or Dawn are around, but still not outside his heroic psychopath period. The other villains are acknowledged as villains - Guy attempts to arrest Max, Captain Boomerang is about to take a shot at Flash, when he puts his lights out (distracting him from arresting Zoom). Hawk...just gets angry at not knowing what's going on.

I know what you're saying. Hank was a mass murderer as Monarch OK - so was Hal as Parallax so was Cap Atom as Monarch II but closer to home Hank RAPED Dawn (that's how the Hector Hall Fate baby that kicked off the Robinson/Goyer JSA was conceived) and apparently killed her and then killed Dinah's beloved "uncles" in the JSA as Extant and mocked them as he was doing it. Gail doesn't to wallpaper over continuity so unless they going to go the present Ironman route (where Tony doesn't remember anything of the bad crap he did so he's OK with everyone again) this stuff HAS to be addressed.

That was already somewhat addressed in Johns' JSA run IIRC. Dawn stated that Mordru was controlling Hank or driving him crazy or something.
