You may recall Betty Brant as J. Jonah Jameson's long-suffering secretary - lately a reporter for the Bugle - and an occasional love interest for Peter Parker before he got serious with MJ. Or, if you were around in 1992....

Yes, the armory. In her closet. Where she keeps an enormous Uzi and a standard-issue 90's Badass Headband.

This was the conclusion of a four-issue arc starring Facade, a villain with powered armor who killed off a few background characters for no good reason and whose identity was never revealed.

I guess that was supposed to set up another appearance later on, but that (contain your shock!) never happened, partly because the arc was very, very bad, and partly because it led directly into the Clone Saga (this issue ends with a teaser to the "Power and Responsibility" arc, where Ben returns), and by the time that was over everybody just wanted to forget that the entire decade had ever happened. But you've got to admit, you're agreeing with him about the outfit.

Actually, not a bad idea. Former love interests make good victims. Particularly for Spidey.

Kyle's girlfriends probably walk around with a bomb belt and a dead-man's switch.

WHAT THE FUCK.

So, Marvel Comics in the 90s---really every bit as bad as their covers appeared?

And by the way, why WAS it that Marvel in the 90s was so into big, big guns?

Not too long before she ended up dating Ben Reilly, actually, if I remember right.

I gotta ask - where do you even go to buy thigh pouches, exactly? Were they like leg warmers in the 80s, sold everywhere and I was just oblivious?

Oh, 90s Betty. You're so ridiculous I can't help but love you for it.

(Speaking of the 90s, Betty, and ridiculousness someone should make a post about her relationship with Ben Reilly. 'Cause I always thought they were cute.)

I'm kind of digging Machine Gun Betty, actually. She's reminding me of Lucinda Dickey, an actress who was in a few films in the eighties (including the infamous Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo and hasn't acted in twenty years.

Duuuuuuuuuuude! Betty Brant is so awesome!

They should like bring back Gwen Stacy and give her a robot arm so they could like team up and fight crime together with lots of guns. That would be totally radical!

It's interesting that the writer actually seems to have known how very, very '90's this was even as he was writing it. In fact, he had the bad guy COMMENT on how very, very '90's it was. For what it's worth, that's pretty clever.
Also, is anyone else reminded of that one issue of Spider-Girl where she's cornered by bad guys, out of webbing, and grabs a humongous gun from somewhere? "Hey, fellas! GUESS WHO'S GOING GRIM N' GRITTY!"
