It's actually kind of distracting. I never really liked the Superman movies. And you can't see anybody other than Reeves here. Fair enough.

Corben is Metallo, right? Did he used to be a soldier? Too many retcons. But that's okay. They'll retcon Superman's origin again by 2015 and there'll be different origins for everyone anyway.

Jeez, on one hand I like the fact that Lois was on to Clark from the start as there being something "up" with him (which is not so obvious in Byrne's re-boot or Waid's Birthright). But Corben/Metallo as the son Lane never had - who dated Lois? C'mon, Geoff. Bad enough that Sam Lane has been ret-conned as being a General all the time (he was a retired Major when he became Luthor's Defense Secretary, no?) but now Lois's mom has been dead for years and years too? The same mother we saw in the Lois and Clark wedding sequences, the same mother who attended her husband's "funeral" and who Lois comforted. Now she's dead from the start? Was there a need to do THIS much ret-conning in Superman's origin? Really?

Like I said, don't worry. They'll retcon Superman's origin again in a few years. A five year gap between retcons seems to be the main standard. We'll still be here for the next few.

The only version of Mrs. Lane I ever knew of was the Lois & Clark version who drank to much.

She was alive and appearing in comics a few years back too, I remember a storyline where she thought Lois was cheating on Clark with Superman.

Oh, I remember that one! It was when Lois was travelling around the world with her mother, right? And every night she was sneaking out by the window to be with Clark/Superman. I mainly remember this because once they ended up making out in a japanese theater. Uh... Anyway. It's kind of sad to see that they killed her off. The mother-daughter relationship was kinda nice, especially during Lois's wedding preparations.

One thing I'm finding I don't like about Johns (and to be fair, he's hardly the only one who does it) is the urge to make everything and everyone connected. It makes the world seem so small, and that's something superheroes should never be.

I don't know. Sometime they get to large and you end up with a feeling the world would be better off without them. THat's more a Marvel thing though.

I mean, why must everybody with the last name "Harper," be magically related? Why do Bruce and Clark have to cross paths when they were younger? And so on. I agree with you completely - it makes the universe they operate in seem so much more limited.

Ok, Johns, killing off Lois's mother in a retconn is not cool. It's needlessly changing a bunch of Superman history and not really adding anything to mythology. (Except for the part where it makes DCU!Lois more like Smallville!Lois. Which is not good enough.)

I love Johns for the most part and especially love Gary Frank on Superman, but is there any way this mini hasn't been kinda pointless so far? I'm seriously asking, as I have only really been skimming the issues.

I have only been keeping up with it through the scans here. Though this mini certainly gave me an opportunity to learn more about John Byrne's take on 'Clark Kent', which I admit am more interested in learning about.

This is only logical. I'm not sold on everything Byrne did (it seems that Jor-El was the only modern Kryptonian who wasn't a wannabe Vulcan) but he made Clark Kent an actual person as opposed to a goofy mask for Superman.

Yeah! And Pa Clark doesn't want Clark to be a surfer, he wants him to be a plumber, but Clark sneaks out anyways to go to the surfing championship, which he wins. And just at the end, after he's got the trophy in one hand, and the Girl(Tm) in the other one, he notices Pa in the crowd, slowing clapping, which starts off a chain of other clappers. He's so proud of his boy!
