So, yeah, Hulkpool.

He happened because of the Intelligencia's big plan, the one they've been building up to.

The one for which they neutralized the Earth's smartest people, stole Tony Stark's big gold Helicarrier, and set Rulk upon everyone else.

... one contingent on several heroes (led by Bruce Banner and Skaar) launching an attack to get their smart guys back in Incredible Hulk:

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

yeah, Wizard's been using his old Frightful Four fellows as subordinates.

while in Hulk, Rulk (working with Banner after having cut ties with the smart guys) mounts a second front of attack, only to run into Awesome Andy (now jacked up on cosmic energy; the Mad Thinker's part of this too) and MODOK:

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

With the help of the recently acquired Cosmic Hulk robot, the two overpower him and strap him into a chamber that drains all the energy he's absorbed into a 'Cathexis Ray.'

Back in Incredible, the heroes eventually overpower the Intelligencia, and Bruce thinks he's won: he's saved his friends, got Amadeus Cho in position to free Betty Ross from a secure cell, and prevented them from turning a bunch of mercenaries into soldier Hulks.

... except that the Cathexis Ray is triggered, fueled by the captured Rulk, and it's all according to plan:

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

(Hulkadeus! Ha.)

But the soldiers weren't the only target; over in Hulk, a trap of the Trapster's making is sprung (who knew that guy was useful for more than dissolving Adhesive X?)

As Rulk monologues, Cathexis radiation blasts the heroes (these guys seem to be the second wave, after Banner's first):

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

And say what you will about everything so far, but this two-page spread is so worth it:

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

(yes, ignore Bucky's hulked-up cybernetics; the idea of Rulk getting his ass handed to him by several Hulked-up heroes is almost worth a lot of the stomping he did in his early days... though he'll probably just up de-Hulking them with his energy drain powers.)

Oh, and don't worry, the first wave also got Hulked back in Incredible, as Bruce discovers:

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

as the mercenary Hulks descend on Washington, as Banner is strapped into the Liddleville thing, and as Rulk is about to get into a hell of a fight... the Fall of the Hulks ends.

(oh, right, Deadpool. He was Rulk's backup, and got Hulked in the Cathexis blast.)

It actually makes sense in context. Plus, this goes with Leader's usual MO of mutating humanity with Gamma radiation.

The "Hulked out Heros" are just a distraction while the Inteligencia moves on with their real plans.

Infact, this sorta thing fits with Leader's usual of Gamma radiating humanity.

Wait, wait, everyone, no, it works.

Cathexis was the missing piece.

I have an explanation about the I think the Hulking out of the heroes is based on how Red Hulk's powers work, instead of Banner's gamma powered mutation. It's almost practically metaphysical, as they should all still be able to function with normal brain capacity.

Word: Cathexis
Definition: Cathexis is the libido's charge of energy, in psychoanalytic terms.

For those of you who have seen William Hurt's 1980's movie Altered States remember how as the mind changed, the body adapted the biology as the state of "being" has been changed. Not just the mind, but the very essence of the being. It's a mental transformation, which then changes to body

The libido part of the brain is where the emotional energy is absorbed and changed, like Cosmic Energy, affecting the original form. The Red Hulk and Red She-Hulk either have extreme mental conditioning or are on medication to give them some control over the unleashed energy of the mind (through the libido) to allow them to properly function mentally while sustaining their tremendous might. That's how Red Hulk is also able to absorb energy, too.

Because Bucky believes the arm to be part of him it's changed.
Because Thor believes Mjolnir to be part of him, the hammer changes as well.
Because Wolverine believes the adamantium to be part of his being it changes as to his belief of his state of being changes, too.
Because Spidey believes the costume to be part of his being it changes.
Rhodey only partially changes because some of the armor acts like an extension of himself (in his mind), the other parts just break off as the body is "Hulked".

This isn't gamma ray mutuation, but rather an attempt to duplicate how Bruce Banner Hulk gets stronger as he gets angrier.

For those of you too young or have not seen Altered States, think of the Red_Hulk-ing up as the effect of a Red Lantern ring. Rage/desire/passion fuels the change and the body adapts. The other rings didn't affect the biology, only the Red Ring did. Emotional rage is tapped by the Red Ring and transforms the rest of body. But since it's from the libido, it's also sexual. That's why Red Hulk has a lot of aggressive sexual posturing towards the females he fights and the alpha male mentality to challenge.

In short, the Red Hulk is a big frigging RED HOT HARD ON.
And you men know exactly what I am talking about.

Yes, I did see that movie, and...
