Three and three-quarter pages from New Mutants #12, Part Three of "Second Coming".  Coincidentally, my fifth volume of New Mutants Classic arrived today.

While the X-Men's Alpha Team battles it out with Stryker and the Purifiers (who have some heavy stuff, such as a "weaponized incantation" (that's shot out of a cannon) that sends Magik to Limbo, the rest of the New Mutants run interference with the Right, who have been ordered to deploy and assist the Purifiers in capturing Hope.

Heh.

The rest of the the team crashes in (including Dani, who, er, doesn't really seem to have any means of fighting them; you still need to work on this badass normal thing, Dani), more fighting.

Wells does a good job using Karma here, whose powers are often kind of difficult to write effectively.  The issue ends with a cyborg-Cameron Hodge stabbing Karma in the leg, which is played like a big cliffhanger but...being stabbed in the leg doesn't even make the Top 50 Superhero Injuries of the month.

Back in main-plot-land, Cable and Hope exit the scene of the fight.

Hope's powers starting to kick in, there.

They've done a good job here of setting up the next issue's segments in each issue so far.

I was totally expecting Dani to nail that guy with the helmet. Totally surprised me when she didn't.

So there is another traitor in the X-Men... again? And Danger is helping now? Didn't she... you know... tried to kill the X-men? Does "Attempted Murder" mean anything in the Marvel-Verse? Or is just when the good guys are accuse of it, or is done away with like Minority Report and they only arrest people because three mutants in milk had a vision of in the future?

1) There's no traitor, that's just what Cable suspects. Bastion is actually tracking the techno-virus in Cable (so Cable is playing right into Bastion's hands here).

2) Danger and Professor X settled accounts in an arc of X-Men: Legacy, and then they made her the warden of the X-Men's special prison.

They can turn around a sentient computer system that tried to kill them, but they stil have issues with "normal" people?

Well, the end of Whedon's original story established that she had a reason for being pissed off, so it's not totally unreasonable that she could be reasoned with (at the same time, that arc heavily roled back the more unsavoury implications about Xavier's conduct, which was a good idea too).

"Emma, if we disqualifed any X-Man because they'd tried to kill us whilst under external influence, we wouldn't have anybody left." (Scott Summers, when Emma questions whether keeping post-Necrosha Doug Ramsey around is a good idea)

Yeah, I really like Roberson's work too. The colourist also has a nice variety of skin tones here.

I really like this art. And if they don't make Hope turn into Jean one day I could really start getting attached to her character.

Ya know, Dani was the only New Mutant to make it past Professor X's training room session on her first try, was trained by Shield and hung around with the Norse Gods.

So why is it she's always depicted as the lamest New Mutant?

"Always"? She's pretty competent here; she doesn't have powers now, which makes things a bit harder (though Wells said in his recent X-Position interview that he's found he likes writing the powerless version of the character).

The only way I know her, and came to like her, was from the second New Mutants book. She seemed pretty awesome in that.

She's only "lame" recently. Back when Claremont wrote the New Mutants, Dani was clearly his favorite character and she could just about do no wrong. In fact, that was one of my (very few) objections to Claremont's long run on the series -- it sometimes read like "Danni Moonstar and her not terribly competent friends."

I'll echo the pretty art comments. Almost makes me want to get the book. I liked Dani in New Mutants V2 but my hatred of them bringing back Doug is turning me off... that and I have no LCS.

What? It's cut well above her navel. By comic book standards, that's practically in the realm of the more restrictive orders of nuns.

I actually like her new costume a lot. WHEN IT'S ZIPPED UP. Seriously, half the artists draw it zipped up to her chin, which is practical, while the other half always draw it zipped down so that her boobs are almost falling out. Even without the whole cleavage thing, it looks much better zipped up because of the big X right in the center.

Aw, Hope's face makes me so sad when Cable says that they won't be staying at anymore hotels. I can just imagine her thinking, "No more bouncing on the beds. No more mini bar. *sob*" Why can't you let Hope have nice things, Cable?

Also, the smiley face armor will never stop making me laugh.

I always found the Smile-faces to be magnificently creepy. That battlesuits designed with the sole purpose of murdering mutants should have something as incongruous as smiley-faces painted on them increases the ICK factor by a factor of 10 at least.

Apart from the initial fight on Utopia, her new Valkyrie powers are only activated when Hela summons her to work for her. It makes a certain amount of sense, though it could easily have gone the other way - but the writer has said he really likes having her as the ex-mutant/normal on the team.

That's...an interesting connection, I hadn't recalled that. But I think the general idea is she's starting to manifest psychic powers and is projecting her thoughts into others unconsciously.
