Anyone notice that Jerry and Debbie are drawn in a markedly different way than the usual Archie house style? Is Hartley making a subliminal suggestion that nonbelievers are a different species from believers like Archie and Betty, or am I reading too much into this?

That's Hartley's own style.
I guess he didn't take his job at Archie seriously enough to apply the house style to all of the art. Just the main characters.
Dan DeCarlo he was not.
